Ok, "WD Green" then raises the question of did you enable TLER? If not, that could be the reason why you have drives dropping out of RAID on and off.

More info at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-Li...Error_Recovery

Western Digital expects consumers to buy consumer drives and *not* use them in RAID setups. If you want to use them in RAID, you should enable TLER, otherwise you'll see strange behavior.

Yep, willing to bet its TLER

When the drive disappears do you get any kind of error notification in MegaRAID?

I might be getting some SSD's and they are coming with a PERC 5i and my question is will it be any better than the onboard raid controller with my asus P6T deluxe oc palm edition board? I guess what I am asking is will I notice a performance hit without it?

board specs:
Southbridge
6 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports
Intel Matrix Storage Technology Support RAID 0,1,5,10
Marvell 88SE6320
2 x SAS (RAID 0 and 1)

I haven't enabled TLER.

I explained the problem badly, it's not a drive that disappear (degraded array) it's the whole array that disappear.

I have no error in MegaRaid because the card disappear. If MegaRaid manager is already opened, nothing happen. If I try to open it after the array disappear, the Manager can't find the card.

I reboot and it's back.. for anywhere from 2 minutes to 5 hours, then disappear again.

I will rebuilt my array with an areca card. I guess it would be a good idea to enabled TLER on my drives before doing so? My other drive is an Hitachi 1tb 32mb

The ICH10R RAID maxes out at around 650MB/s. The Marvell 88SE6320 is connected to the Southbridge via x1 PCIe so it will max out at 250MBs/s.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the PERC 5/i peaks out at.... I know the PERC 6/i can do at least 1000MB/s.
Once again...

Thanks for the very fast reply. The short answer would be YES, I will take a performance hit. Many thanks and +rep.

What SSDs are they? If they are coming with a PERC I would guess they are older models with no cache in their onboard controllers. If this is the case, the biggest problem you will face without the PERC is not the max sequential rate, but the stuttering that you may encounter. With the PERC in the loop you should not experience any stuttering, so your performance will be far more satisfactory.

I believe the PERC 5 will top out for sequential reads at a similar level to the ICH10R (based upon other people's results I have seen). It definately appears to be considerably slower than the PERC 6. Sequential writes with new, empty drives may even be slightly slower on the PERC than the onboard matrix controller (at least in benchmarks). However as the drives fill up you will start to notice the benefit of the onboard cache more and more, especially during random writes. Most benches won't show this, but if you get stuttering with the onboard controller it will drive you nuts.

You will almost certainly get better real-world performance by using the PERC.

Hello there,

I have bought this controller and i have made some tests with some SATA drives until now.

Two days ago i ordered 3 Seagate Savvio 15K ST936751SS from ebay.

Now i have to buy some cables for these SAS drives too. I have found some cables in ebay but all of them are using molex adapters for the power.

My problem is that i need to find some SAS cables that can take power from sata cable and not molex.

Can you help me to find such a cable ?

I have found this in ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NJ056-Cable-As...3%3A1|294%3A50

Does anyone know if i can use this cable to connect my 3 Savvio disks on the Perc 5/i controller?
