The 'registered' (also called 'buffered') nature of the RAM relates to a buffer, kind of like a holding area, between the actual RAM chips that hold the data and the rest of the system. It is not related to the SPD chip specifically (almost all DIMMs have an SPD, although the SPD will contain information relating to the presence of the buffer). I would hope that the memory controller would handle the reported speed difference, as memory can always (within reason) be used at lower clock rates than specified by the SPD. In fact the memory controller may completely ignore the SPD data, and just attempt to use whatever memory is present as though it is exactly the correct type anyway.

I may be wrong here though - the PERC has proved itself to be very picky, so the announced speed may be a problem also. As stated though, the firmware is irrelevant.

If you are buying new memory specifically, it makes sense to get exactly what you need to avoid any problems. The devil is in the details...

Ok after a fast search i found this memory : M393T6553CZ3-CCC

Here is a link with a short description http://www.memoryten.com/pc/002392/D...-3200ER-512MB/

Do you think it will be compatible with the Perc 5/i ?

According to this post (credit to RobiNet), that DIMM is exactly what you need.

Edit: looks like he is quicker than me though...

I've found two:
used - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=370081041735
new - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=320180005959

both located in USA and I think the price is OK ...

The problem is that my controller isn't compatible with my memory that is KVR667D2E5/512 from Kingston. Does anyone know to tell my what 512MB ram exactly to buy for this PERC 5/i controller?

My controller is using firmware 7.0.1-0066 from LSI if that helps you.

By the way, as far as I can tell, the firmware doesn't matter when it comes to the question of memory support, that's a function of the memory controller that is in the IOP333 processor.
I bought a memory upgrade (512MB) from ebay described in this post http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives...ml#post6609251.

I received it only recently (5 days), but until now there are no problem with this memory (I bought 2 dimm; one for me and one for a friend. Also my friend is not having any problems).

Thanks a lot RobiNet i just ordered the second one that it is new.

Now the waiting is killing me. I have the controller, 3 Savvio 15k.1 and the correct sas cable waiting for some benchmark tests

A few posts ago you mentioned that your card worked ok with the original 256MB stick. Why not use that in the meantime? The cache will not usefully affect your benchmark results anyway - in fact it will make life harder to troubleshoot.

You will likely see a little performance gain every now and again from the larger cache, but it is not a must-have upgrade by any means. Depending on your disk usage you may notice no difference at all between the 2 cache sizes.

I have checked my card with a cheap P5K-VM motherboard 2-3 months ago with 3 sata drives and everything worked ok but 2 days ago after i plugged my controller on my Asus P6T when i use it with the 256MB stick i got a message from the controller that there are some ECC errors with the memory and that i must press the key X to continue.

Bad luck again i guess.
