PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 315

Well that is good to know. I dont know what it is, but ive always wanted my hard disks to perform the best possible.. I guess thats because i have always heard that they are the slowest link in the computer.

As for the Seagates they have served me well. I have all ones with later firmware than the ones that were having issues, I bought them all from best buy for this reason (while they were on sale anyway) so I could take them back if they had older firmware and checked the reviews (newegg) before hand. I also tested them each of them for about a week before i put them into raid5. I have another than i use for an extra drive in my pc. Since for some reason my pc doesnt like to boot without at least one drive not hooked up to my perc. Not sure on the reasoning for that???

As for SAS/SATA - you can use the different disks on the controller without issue. You just cannot use a mixture of the 2 interfaces in a single array. I would be mroe concerned as to whether your Seagate drives (presumably 7200.11s) are going to have issues all of their own...
Thanks for the info.

Anyone Else with thought? Maybe RobiNet or MetalPhreak since they booth have the drives in question. Althought I looked but never seemed to run across RobiNet's performance.

Yes, it will erase the drive when it initializes it. To the best of my knowledge you can't use a single drive on the Perc RAID cards like you could on a standard SATA controller.

About the RAM on this card... I've read that it's very picky. I realize there is a specific type of DDR2 memory that it needs, but once you get the right type, will any stick of that type work, or is it picky even within memory of the proper type?

IE: Will any 256MB or 512MB stick of 1RX8 PC2-3200R-333-12 or 1RX16 PC2-3200R-333-12 work with the card? Or, are there only certain brands and models of 1 rank x8 or 1 rank x16 Registered ECC PC2-3200 (DDR2-400) CAS3 memory that will work?

I cant not remember which but i bought one of these sticks and it worked fine. Neweggs Login system is messing up at the moment so i cannot tell you for sure.

Likely the first one since it needs Registered memory and the 2nd is not.

I already bought a comparable 512MB module off ebay for $8 shipped. I hope it works.

My benchmark for 3x 300GB VelociRaptors RAID 5/64k/Adaptive/Write Back:
236.7MB/sec Maximum
191.1MB/sec Average
7.5 Access

These numbers seem really disappointing to me, considering there 7200RPM drives here getting ~300MB/sec average. What do you guys think?

What's your stripe size and what application did you use to arrive at those numbers?
