Few questions on the ram. Whats the largest ammount that can be put in one of these and is 256MB enough? Anyone know of any ram that has the right ammount of chips?

SDIM.

I have write back enabled in the bios for the drives however it still won't let me enable this feature in windows.

It just reports.
"This device does not allow its write caching setting to be changed"
I am running an old firmware (Dells latest). 5.2.2-0072

Are there later drivers for Windows 7. I am just using the default ones.

Ideas?

You can put 512MB in the card. Whether or not it makes any difference depends on your usage pattern. However, given the price of a 512MB DIMM (~$9 shipped on ebay) there isn't really any good reason to not have 512MB.

You want to use 1 Rank x8 Registered ECC DDR2-3200 (400MHz) or 1 Rank x16 Registered ECC DDR2-3200 (400MHz).

Maybe download the drivers for Server 2008 (x86 or x64) for the card and use those in Win 7?

You have to either find Dell's management software or use LSI's to enable write back cache.

*if it's enabled in bios it is probably on. But you'd have to install one of the management utilities to verify.

If anyone is interested in buying a PERC6 card and a lot of hard drives for a great price and awesome speed, have at it:

over 620MBPS RAID array with 6TB of capacity.

Hello,

this has really been a long-going thread now! This is why it is reall yhard to find the specific information I search for.

We have a four servers coming quite bare in regards to drives, but all of them are equipped with a Dell PERC 6/i.

We are planning on creating a database server test scenario on one of those with 8x Intel X25-M, most probably split into two RAID 10 arrays, four each.

1) Does the PERC 6/i recognize the Intel X25-M?
2) I heard of random dropouts of those drives from the arrays, is that true?

On of the servers going to be used as iSCSI target, and we are having an eye on the emerging 2TB (real) 7200rpm SATA drives like the Hitachi 7K2000 and the WD2001FASS.
Are 2TB drives recognized and stable?

Thanks you!

Hello! I am new first post. I too pick up a perc 5i from ebay $120. Post on my GA-EP45-UD3D without tape mod.
I plan on using two patroit warp 128gb ssd's (I got on ebay for 200 each) on raid 0. This is my attemp to gain stableness from stutters and pauses that these ssd's are known for. I am hoping the cache on the card will give me more stable and fast diliverence of data.
Is the raid on the motherboard ICH10R good enough or will the perc 5i do better. Or am I on the wrong track and just get higher quality ssd,s.

Thanks
