PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 369

Speaking of BBU, does anyone know where I can get one, with cable and plastic clip, for something less than an exorbitant price? I've done some looking around but the only source I can find wants $89.

eBay is the only place really. The cables are usually pretty expensive but you can usually get the batteries for a reasonable price (I have been lucky and all the PERCs I have bought included the cable though, and 1 was a full set).

Don't worry about the mounting clip - cable ties/duct tape/velcro does the same job.

I was thinking about getting one of these on ebay for a 8x2tb drive raid 5 storage computer, my only concern is that if the card dies would i be able to replace it (with another perc 5i) and rebuild the array or would i be boned?

yeas you can replace it with another PERC5 but to be honest with that many drives and that much data I would go with the PERC 6/i and run RAID-6, also I dont think you have to rebuild the array as the RAID data is stored on the drives so you should be able to plug them into the new card and it would recognise them as PERC 6/i RAID

I think my perc 5/i just magically died. It's been running pretty solid with heavy use for almost a year running a raid 5 array. Came down this morning and tried accessing the data share (which is hosted on the perc 5/i) and couldn't access it. Rebooted the server and the perc never popped up. So I tried it in another couple rigs and samething. With and without the tape over pin 5 and 6.

So now my dilemma, get another perc 5/i (what happend to them being $100 on ebay?), try a perc 6/i (what's the usual price of these?) or just stick with onboard????

Did you have active cooling for the card? The stock heatsink is only good for high-airflow (LOUD) servers. If you can sit in the same room as your PC and have not either directed a fan onto the heatsink or upgraded it to something significantly better you may have killed the card due to temperature.

Honestly, I think this thread happened. Which basically means it's Duckie's fault...

$39.95 http://discountechnology.com/Dell-U8...-Dell-Perc-5-i

Got 2 batteries from them, look new and so far work great (~6 months). If you fill out a review, they give you $25 back.

They're out of stock. And their site isn't clear as to whether it includes the cable and plastic holder. If you're absolutely sure you got both from them, then I'll backorder one.

They are always on backorder. The item at the link is battery only, nothing else. Time from order to the box at the door ~3 weeks.

Check a user here that beings with "Bonita" + 2 numeric values.

He often has cards for sale.

RAID5 + Onboard.... SRLYS?
