The batteries themselves are almost exactly the same, the 6/i batteries being a bit newer and with a different model number. Some say the 6/i batteries last a little longer, could be true (theoretically since the chemistry of the batteries would be newer since the 6/i is a newer part, it could mean the batteries themselves are newer than the 5/i ones which could have been manufactured long ago, especially if you buy the cards used) but there hasn't been any definitive proof (show me the numbers!).

The only area you may have an issue is if you try using a 5/e or 6/e battery on the 5/i or 6/i. Some people have tried using these combinations in this thread before and reported the battery was not recognized.
Thanks DJZeratul for your swift answer...exactly what I was looking for..! REPZ!

Tomorrow, my new case and HDDs will arrive, and I can finally get to work on my Perc 5/i. I have installed a zalman headsink on the Intel CPU, but my the ARM chip is currently bare. Is this a problem? My new case should have good airflow but I really don't want to overheat anything.

New setup is:

ARK 4U-500-CA case (7 HDD bays!)
Corsair 650w Modular PS (9 SATA power connectors!)
7x WD1001FALS 1TB Cavair Black (array)
1x Seagate 7200.11 320GB (Boot, System)
Perc 5/i with Zalman heatsink, battery
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI motherboard (socket 939, reuse!)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (939) @ 2.21GHz
Arctic Freezer 7 Pro HSF.
4x G.Skill 1GB DDR-400
ATI X1950GT (reuse!)

Anyone see any problems?

The ARM chip can get somewhat hot, but its designed to work without a heatsink... It should be fine without any additional cooling. Point a small fan at it if you are really worried about it.

The only problem I can see is (potentially) with your cpu cooler.

The Freezer 7 Pro does not support s939 - it is a s775-only hsf. You need the Freezer 64 Pro or the Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 for s939 support. I hope you have the Rev. 2 and just didn't post the full name...

I currently have the cooler mounted on the motherboard, and the system runs at 30C, so I'm pretty sure it works. Maybe it is a Rev 2. It's old hardware I'm reusing. My original server build ended up being way too much unused horsepower (Phenom II x4 940).

If you have it mounted then it obviously works - I just didn't want to buying the cooler then cursing when you tried to put it all together!

Pics?

I'll post some when I'm confident in my cabling. I'm really OCD about it.

It's a sideband cable - for use with compatible backplanes etc for controlling LEDs and the like usually.

Don't worry about it & leave it disconnected.
