PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 396

I'm running into a problem with my Perc 5/i.

At the moment, the motherboard BIOS recognizes it, and lets the Perc BIOS start, which pauses for a second with a battery error message, and then complains that "All of the disks from your previous configuration are gone. If this is an unexpected message, then please power off your system and check your cables to ensure all disks are present. Press any key to continue, or 'C' to load configuration utility." The system halts on this screen and will not advance, with just a blinking underscore cursor on the bottom line.

The problem is that while the motherboard bios is receiving keyboard input, the Perc bios is just ignoring my keystrokes. The NumLock key doesn't even work. I've tried using two different USB keyboards and one PS/2 keyboard, with the same results.

The worst part is, in order for me to get into the motherboard's bios configuration, I have to remove the Perc 5/i, because the system checks controller card bioses before actually entering the config screen.

Last I checked, I had the USB legacy keyboard support enabled. I can't figure out what to do. Help!

Tried the card with and without the HDDs. Also tried dropping down to 2x1GB DDR-400. No success.

The Perc 5/i seems to cause my motherboard to reset the CMOS. Sometimes it gives an error, other times it doesn't, but devices I've disabled are showing up again once I insert the Perc 5/i. I don't get it.

EDIT: This is incredibly frustrating. I'm starting to wonder if the Perc 5/i is compatible with the nForce4-SLI chipset. I have my board in SLI mode (which enables the second x16 slot), and the card is starting. I am at a loss. I might give up for the night.

EDIT 2: One Motherboard BIOS update later, my array is building. It's going about 1% per 10 minutes... I'm not looking forward to having to do this ever again. Is there a "quick initialize" function that is worth using?

I have DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-D.

It has the Nforce 4 chipset. The perc works fine, without any mod.

Thank you guys, for all the help and knowledge

I've been able to "test" my PERC6i with a single 250GB Samsung drive (desktop) that LuciferX lent me. The results are very nice, We tested the drive with the different controller's cache policies and even a single drive gains quite an awesome speed bump! I can't wait until I get my hands on a bunch of WD RE drives

Some issues and questions:

1. I'm not able to run the MegaRaid Storage Manager (Thanks DJZeratul!) from windows 2008 x64. The first time I run the app it gets stuck at the splash screen while a java instance starts eating memory until I kill it from the task manager. If I either kill the app and restart it -or- start the megaraid service (from services.msc) I get past the splash screen to the main screen but no computers are detected at all. Firewall is disabled and I even tried to connect to the loopback (127.0.0.1) with no success.
The software works wonders on windows XP x32 though...
Windows XP asked for a driver (I used the LSI ones) while 2008 recognized the card from scratch as a DELL PERC. Tried forcing the LSI drivers for 2008 x64 but still MSM won't work. Any clues or recommendations?

2. Temperature (D*mn this intel IO processor with its 'flaming' 11W TDP ):
I got a nice cooler attached to the heatsink as you can see in the picture below, but I've been touching it and was quite HOT. Therefor I placed a thermaltake blower (LuciferX's) shooting a blizzard aimed straight to the PERC's heatsink but the little beast remained HOT. I was wondering what is the nominal working temperature and also if you could tell (counting on your vastly experience) if the small cooler will suffice.

Small Cooler:

Checking Temp with a not-so-accurate sensor

(53ºC ~ 127.4ºF)

Thermaltake's ears-grinder at full throttle

Thanks, once again!

Would be handy if you post back if you find a way to do it though...

Could add a 500GB drive and migrate from a 3xRAID0 to a 4xRAID5..... and then remove the faulty drive?
Once again...

I got my array configured, OS installed, and now I'm working on transferring data to the array. I really want to take some photos of my setup but at the moment, I'm really disappointed with my wiring, which is just awful. I'm using 36-inch SAS->SATA cables when I only need 6-inch ones. Also, I've discovered that the Zalman heatsink isn't quite enough to cool the IOP passively, and that I need a 40mm fan to put with it.

Shabranigdu, I'm not sure if you're using the Dell firmware or the LSI one, but I'm using the Dell firmware on a Perc 5/i. I've gotten the MSM to work on Windows 2008 x64 R2 using 3.04-02.

You can download it here:

http://www.lsi.com/DistributionSyste...indows_MSM.zip

Hopefully that will work on Windows 2008 x64 even if it is a Perc 6/i. (My 6/i should be coming in a few days...)

I'm looking for a replacement BBU for my Perc 5/i. Apparently leaving it in the box for a year while my server project was on hold has put it into deep discharge, and it looks as though it'll have to be replaced. Should I just order a new one from Dell directly? Dell wants $50.

Also, where can I get the most recent firmware and drivers? The OP's links are semi-busted.
