Also, where can I get the most recent firmware and drivers? The OP's links are semi-busted.

Thanks for the link. I updated my firmware, and have resumed transferring data. I've decided to order a few 40mm fans from NewEgg to tinker around with, in hopes that I can get my Perc 5/i a little cooler. I also ordered a replacement BBU from Dell.

Hi guys, just bought myself a 5/i on ebay. What's the easiest way to upgrade the Heatsink/fan? Also, on the card itself, I see two chips, which one is the Intel IOP? The one on the right (from the OP's pics)? What is the one on the left for?

thanks!

The one on the right (under the heatsink) is the XOR processor. The other chip (IIRC - I don't own one) is an LSI SAS/SATA disk controller. In the PERC 6 series the 2 chips are combined in a single RAID/disk controller package.

To better cool the Intel IOP the easiest way is to find a larger heatsink (I use an old s370 cooler minus the fan), trim is so it will fit, then use the stock clip to hold it in place. The other chip doesn't really need cooling, but if it bothers you add a ram sink or similar.

hi guyz, I'm thinking of switching my data server's OS from Win 7 Ultimate x64 to either OpenFilers or Citrix XenServer. Anyone done this successfully before without losing their data? Is there like a configuration export from Win OS to Xen or OpenFilers? Cheers.

what filesystem is your array formatted with?

If it's NTFS I would not migrate it to a non-native Windows system personally. NTFS support just ain't good enough IMO.

Dang...i updated fw from latest Dell (5.2.2.0072) to latest LSI (7.0.1-0074) and could not boot. I thought that the array had dropped, but when rebooting the Perc could not be found in the boot menu...When powering off and booting again the Perc Bios started, but after that there was an "!" and nothing happened.

Motherboard is ASRock A780GMH/128M and Perc5i works with pinmod. The array is raid-0 on 2xVertex SSD's and Win 7 x64 installed.

You can download it here:

Hopefully that will work on Windows 2008 x64 even if it is a Perc 6/i. (My 6/i should be coming in a few days...)
Thanks! I was using an older MSM version.... the one you posted works just fine!

Photo time, more to come when I have more time.

EDIT: I have some higher resolution photos to share, as soon as I get Lightroom installed... For now, a few more low-res shots:

EDIT 2: I got the DPS daughter board and I/O shield for my GA-K8NXP-SLI from Gigabyte. Their customer service is fantastic, and shipping was quick too. I installed the parts on my lunch break from work, and will test the system tonight. I also installed the rackmount brackets on my Cisco switch, which I will be mounting in the rack on Thursday night when I complete my ethernet drop runs.

EDIT 3: Did I kill the thread? I installed the I/O shield, DPS daughter board, and stealthed in a fan controller for the intake fan.

EDIT 4: Received my replacement battery for the PERC 5/i, along with some more mounting hardware for my rack. Tonight, I'll be mounting just about everything other than the server itself. I'm still working on cooling down the northbridge, which is incredibly hot with the stock fan.

EDIT 5: Racked the server:
