can anyone recommend a good software to test write speed

When the setup works this way putting any other card than a graphics card in that slot will usually lead to problems and stability issues.
Probably? I don't see anything in the manual or tech specs from Intel to indicate that the x16 slot is for graphics cards only.

I've tried it on a couple of boards and the result is pretty much the same each time - The controller won't work.
What kind of boards? DG33TL? Other G33 boards?

I asked Intel a while back and they told me all their motherboards with onboard graphics would happily accept non-gpus in all their PCIe slots. I even managed to get escalated to an engineer to double-check. Didn't get a list of compatible cards, but he said that they were tested with RAID cards also.

Never actually tried it though - so YMMV...

Ok, good deal. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I will assume that a PCI-E slot is a PCI-E slot.

Anybody seeing this error using the PERC 5/i in Windows? I'm running out of ideas.

note that my reply concerns Intel's own motherboards - not any one with an Intel chipset.

All PCIe slots are definately NOT created equal, and some will not support anything other than a gpu.

My board is an Intel DG33TL-M (G33 chip, onboard graphics, Q6600 cpu). I don't think there are any limits on what I can use the x16 slot for.
