PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 418

I'm new to the forum and have managed to acquire all the bits and pieces (PERC 5i) and got it working when testing with an old hard drive.

I'm now about to get the last bit of the puzzle, three 2TB HDD's that will be setup in RAID5 that will be expanded in the future.

I had previously decided on getting the new Samsung F3 2TB drives (HD203WI) but after realizing that drop-outs from the array might become a problem with non-RAID drives, I'm a bit unsure. The reasons for going with these drives are price and noise.

Now I wonder what experiences people have had using desktop drives (non-RAID) in a RAID5 setup and in particular the Samsung F3 2TB drives? Have you experienced drop-outs, and have these happened during normal or intensive use? Is there a way of minimizing the chances of these drop-outs happening? As I understand, the CCTL (or TLER) cannot be enabled on these drives.

I'd like to avoid paying up to the double for drives that have been specified for RAID, so any sugestions or alternatives that can be had cheaply are apreciated.

I've been running 4 Western Digtal 320GB consumer/standard drives in Raid 5 since about September/October time. I've never had any issues with drop outs on them.

Does anyone know if i can use Perc 5/i with standby or hibernation enabled in Windows 7? The problem is that after my PC wakes up it doesn't see the controller and the system hangs up. Is there any specific firmware i have to flash to solve this problem or anything else i can do ?

I doubt that Dell would make any effort to address this, as they officially only support Dell branded drives with their RAID controllers. Re-writing the firmware to work with 4kb sector drives on an old PERC 5 controller certainly doesn't seem like something worthwhile for Dell to do...
Yeah, you're right - 4k sectors vs the traditional 512k - and yes, the jumper _should_ have worked according to their very sketchy documentation, but unfortunately it still failed my testing methodology (which consisted of a very scientific: creating a new raid array, formatting it and copying a heap of photos onto it and then flick through them looking for corruptions).

As for whether Dell or LSI address this in future firmwares - I think you're right - they've moved onto newer products now and probably won't spend the effort adding this. Perc6's perhaps, but not Perc5's - not unless there's pressure on them from corporates to do so.

Have you done the pin-mod? If so you probably can't hibernate your system. A firmware flash almost certainly won't help either. Can't be more helpful than that I'm afriad - I run Hyper-V so I can't hibernate/sleep anyway.

Unless the PERC 6 work already I doubt you'll get a fix. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if these drives don't (and will never) work on the newer series of controllers - at least until Dell themselves release a drive with 4k sectors (as only Dell drives work anyway).

Your best bet for a working firmware would be direct from LSI - which means PERC 6 owners are out of luck...

I just wanted to get some opinions, I just bought a Perc 5/i and my goal for this is to run 3xWestern Digi 1TB Blacks in raid 5, I plan to use this for a SAN for vmware running FreeNAS or Openfiler etc. has anyone had any issued with this? Also the motherboard I will be using this on is an Asus P5N-E its a Nvidia 650i motherboard.

Yes, because of a Firmware issue, Western Digital Black 1TB drives will not do RAID 0, I suggest going for Samsung Spinpoint F3's.

It actually applies to all levels of RAID.

If you contact Western Digital about 1TB Blacks not working in RAID they will tell you that those drives are not designed for RAID and you should get their RAID Edition drives.

The Problem deals with the Firmware level (since obviously, older drives have had no issue with RAID in the past, and 500GB Blacks do not either.) When you set the drives to a RAID Level the drives will enter a recovery state which is extended and can cause a drive to drop out of the array.
