PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 428

Hey guys.
Been running with 6x Seagate 7200.11 1.5tb drives on a perc5 for 6months now without problems (1 drive died at some point and was replaced without problems).
Now my array is full and I need to expand it.
To be honest even when I bought those seagate drives, I didn't like them, because of the scandal with the .11 series (although those were carefully picked to have the right firmware) and my general bad experience with the company. But I did it anyway because I wanted performance and there was no other 7200rpm 1.5tb drive back then. So I was forced to buy them, but had in mind that I would be changing them with a 7200rpm 1.5tb 3platter(500) non-seagate drive when that was available. (I was really hoping for a samsung F3 1.5tb back then to be released soon).

Well....all those months later....guess what? No other 7200rpm 1.5tb drive available even now...(special enterprise/raid series are not counted as they are uber expensive).
Western digital upped its blue-line (=7200rpm) to 1tb lately, and also released that 2tb black beast at super expensive price....but no 1.5tb model other than greens...

Well, my array is full and I need to expand, but I don't want to get another stinkin 7200.11 to expand it....so I am evaluating my options here...and thinking of even changing to 2tb drives...

Assuming I go with the new western digital green series (WD20EARS), will there be any problem with the perc and all those power-saving features? (heard of drives vanishing from raid when they go idle etc) and what about the new 4kb formatting system those drives have? Any problem with that, or it's only about the OS?

My options now would be either to get another 7200.11 1.5tb and have 7x1.5 = 6x1.5 usable = 9tb
Or change to 6x2tb for 10tb usable space. Pricewise it's about the same if I go with WD20EARS and I gain additional expandability, but I will lose performance (I think those green drives are about 80mb/s average, the seagate is 100mb/s, and a 7200rpm 500platter should be around 120mb/s).

If you have any suggestions for other drives feel free to say so....but the most important thing is to tell me if the green drives will work correctly, because if not I should stop even thinking about it and go for a 7200.11 1.5tb , or keep waiting for affordable 2tb 7200rpm drive.

Before I spent $175 on cables I would have bought another case...

Yep... looked at that one too, but server cases are't readily available out here, and as it is, the one I bought cost the equivalent of US$800

I'd have loved to, but they are few and far between out here. As it was, the one I bought set me back equiv. US$800

I have a question about PERC 6/i on gigabyte ga-h55m-s2h. Does the PCI16x slot support PERC 6/i? I want to buy the bundle at Fry's.

Thanks.

I would assume so, but I have not tried the card on an H55 platform.

I'm running my 5i fine on a x16 slot, so I assume a 6i would work too.

I've not come across a problem running without a GPU on AMD Gigabyte boards.

I would suggest Emailing Gigabyte and asking them about that specific board just to be sure.

Phrase the question like "Can I use a PCIe RAID Card in the PCIe x16 Slot of the Gigabyte H55m-S2H and have the board post just fine using the onboard Video as a display source?"

Oh, I'll add that it's working fine on my board, and I run crossfire as well.

I haven't tried the new 2TB WD Green with 4k sectors. but I've been using 3 1TB WD Green drives with my PERC6i (and previously with a 5i) for about a year in a RAID 5 array without any issues. the machine runs 24x7.

We also have several 15 drive arrays at work full of WD Green 1TB connected to a PERC 6E in a RAID 6 array running 24x7 as a database drive for medical records for a 40 doctor clinic. Gets heavy usage everyday. No issues. Had drives go out here or there, but they rebuild quickly once we put in a replacement drive.

I don't see any issues with the power management features of the WD Green drives and the PERC 5i, 6i or 6E cards.
