PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 431

Hey guys, got a problem.
I'm working on adding another drive to my R5, and I accidentally unplugged the power to one of the drives in my original R5 and it became degraded. I didn't realize that I unplugged it until after I used my WDTLER utility and shut down the computer.
Now, I connected the power to it again, and go into the PERC 6i's bios and it says the drive is missing...but it's all hooked up again, SATA and Power.
Is there any way I can remedy this? It's not letting me rebuild my array either. Luckily, it's still operational and all the files are still accessible when I'm in Windows.
Why would it say the drive is missing when it's really there? Do I have to format the drive in Windows and reconnect it to the card?

As you can tell, I'm at a loss...please help!

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Here's what fixed it (easily)
When the system was booting, I got the usual PERC load screen, but also got this message:
Quote:
Foreign configuration(s) found on adapter. Press any key to continue, or 'C' to load the configuration utility or 'F' to import foreign configuration(s) and continue.
I was hitting CTRL-R to go into the BIOS to try to figure, but that didn't work.
So, when I rebooted the machine, I hit "F" this time and it loaded into Windows. I checked the array with MegaRAID and noticed it was rebuilding.
So, the fix was to press F when I got that screen.

Hope that helps anyone in the future...even though it's kind of an easy one.

I figured it out, nevermind.

Question:
I'm still working on adding another drive to my R5. Does the new drive need to be formatted and wiped clean before I add it to the array? (it has some files on it) Or will the drive be formatted/wiped clean when I add it?

ShadowFox, would you mind documenting the steps you took in fixing the issue? In case someone has a similar issue, so they can fix it using your steps? It would be a great help for the PERC community

Thanks man!

Also to answer your second question, the drive will be wiped clean when you add it, so formatting and wiping it isn't really necessary.

a) No longer see any virtual disks to install windows on
b) Couldn't book from the installed virtual disk
c) The bios used to say RAID : (Virtual Disk Name) under hard drive selection but now says RAID : Dell Perc5/i Controller Bus 6

Any help would be much appreciated as I now have an unusable system!

Thanks
Are you able to get into the PERC's BIOS (ctrl-R), and if so, what does that tell you regarding the array?

I added the fix to the OP of the question...it was really easy, I kinda feel stupid for not doing that in the first place

Thanks for answering my question!

Hey, we all miss the little things sometimes... It helps to document everything, because some people would definitely be inclined to not import the foreign array if their array was degraded... Doing so may further jeopardize their data. Its good to know that importing the foreign VD solved your problem, and I am sure that post will help someone in the future.

I'm kind of hoping this thread in particular can be a go-to spot for information about the PERC. So adding all of our steps to solving issues with it will help people immensely.

I was even toying around with the idea of starting a CMS with a forum (drupal based) that has a lot of the good info from this thread categorized and quickly searchable by keyword... But I need a few people to help me extract all the good data from here. If anyone is interested in helping me out, please let me know

EDIT:

Well, I went ahead and bought these:

1.INFO Domain Name Registration
- 1 Year
$1.07
HARDWARERAID.INFO

1.INFO Domain Name Registration
- 1 Year
$1.07
RAIDCARD.INFO

because at a dollar and seven cents for a year of registration, I would be a fool not to. Expect to see a multisite drupal install at http://perc.raidcard.info and http://perc.hardwareraid.info very soon. I am probably going to delve into creating CMS components for other raid cards as well, hence the relatively all-encompassing TLD.

Got a quick ? guys. I recently got a Perc 5i and its installed and seems to be working fine but i have no drives attached to it yet as im waiting for the cable to come from hong kong and also i have a dead BBU. Can anyone give me a good place to get a new BBU? i have looked on ebay but dunno if i can trust the seller to give me a new battery and not just some used one that's going to die in a few months.

Is there any way i can maybe fix the battery i have? I saw a post about replacing the cells.?

I just ordered one through here: http://discountechnology.com/Dell-U8...i?partner=1010

They say it is a new pull, meaning it was sent configured in a system, but removed before being deployed. Otherwise, brand new ones look to be around $90ish.

Okay, my PERC 6i has just finished adding my fourth 1TB Caviar Black to my R5, and I've got a few questions:

1. The system is showing that it's 3.63TB with a 4 disk array, shouldn't it be around 2.79TB?

2. This part I'm not complaining about, but I just ran HD Tune and got this result from my R5, the results seem too good to be true:

HD Tune: DELL PERC 6/i Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 328.5 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 376.2 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 358.4 MB/sec
Access Time : 9.6 ms
Burst Rate : 463.4 MB/sec
CPU Usage : -1.0%

3. The HD Tune program is showing that it's a 2199GB volume...what the heck is going on here? LOL!

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure that its still a RAID5? It sounds to me like it just converted to a RAID0. 3.79 TB sounds correct for a 4x1TB disk RAID0. The benchmarks also seem to be on par for 4x1TB Cav. Blacks in RAID0
