Gah. Oh well. I ordered another set that are listed as straight throughs from another company, and should have them by 10:30am tomorrow, so I'll confirm then. Thanks for your response though, basically confirmed my suspicion. Now what to do with the cables? I got them as "Open Box", so I only paid $19 for both, and they want to eat $3 for restocking + shipping back... guess they'll go in the box of junk parts.

someone should update the first page of this thread with the correct companies that build these cables.

i ended up buying sata extension cords to deal with my large tower.

This thing is so huge... I read the first 40 or so pages, then the last 15, that was it. I probably miss some juicy tips and such, but damn this thing is massive.
Just got confirmation that my new cables show up no later than 10:30am PST tomorrow. Hopefully all is well there. Even with this re-buy, I'm building this 5 drive NAS for <$1k USD, which IMO is pretty stellar. At worst I might need to put a real eternet card in it, as the one that's in it seems... awkward.

Well, the front page states that "SAS SFF-8484" cables are needed, the cables you are talking about are "32SAS47". I'm not familiar with this SAS stuff, but I think these are two different types of cable.

That's just the model number of the cable, not the cable type.

So, new cables showed up, and I see 5/5 drives now in the BIOS. I went through and created the new VD, and it seems to be stuck with initializing. The "Elapsed time" is stopped a 2s, and the Estimated time left shows "6Hrs 4Min 3Sec". Looking at the event log there's no errors or anything... so I think I'm just going to let it go for a long bit and check back on it later. But, for the most part, those stupid cables don't work with the PERC 6/i. I think I'll leave a comment on Newegg just so future buyers know...

Edit: timers aren't real time. They just both updated. Little under 5 hours and I should have my RAID5 up. Woo...

Getting dismal performance on my perc 5/I right now with 4 vertex 2 ssd drives! Going to try to update the cards bios I'm at 5.0.0 I think

Enabled write back and read through and getting same performance as single ssd

I've never testing my Vertex 2s on my PERC drive, but that isn't really the use for which the PERC was intended. The Vertex 2 drives have excellent Sandforce microcontrollers on board, and for RAID you're really best off doing software RAID. I would just set them up using your southbridge (or software RAID in Linux) and then use the PERC for mechanical drives in RAID5 or RAID0. RAID5 is really where this controller shines.

It obviously supports RAID0, but most people want a dedicated RAID card for faster rebuild rates, support for hotspares, and faster write performance due to the onboard memory buffer.

Was mostly trying to compare to the on board ICH9 to see if any gains could be had in RAID 0, plus do a direct comparison between my 3 SAS drives to 3 SSD to 3 SATA

Tried updating the BIOS and am actually getting an error and it wont update.
