PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 586

Thanks guys, I had a feeling it was going to be the cable as that was the only thing that changed.

I have ordered this one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310306031711&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:AU:3160

I'm hoping that this is the correct cable, as we need this right away and ex-dell is 3-4 weeks!

By the description it should be fine!
At least, I very very hope so!

Because I'm pretty sure I ordered one of those a couple days ago too! loll tongue.gif

Just got a perc 5/i off ebay that has arrived today. but I'm having some issues. First of all, the card causes both my fileserver and my main system to not post if the RAM is installed in the card. The only way I can get the card to work is to remove the 256MB RAM.

But even with the RAM out I can not seem to get the card working. And the latest Dell firmware fails to update the card, and megacli fails to see the card

The card appears in device manager but it is not listed as I would expect: (One of the RAID Controllers is my Jmicron controller that I havn't installed the drivers for)

So i'm at my whits end right now, so I'm hoping I can get some help here. I'm having several problems.

System: Evga 780i SLI motherboard, Q6600, 2x4gb ram, Win Server 2k8 R2 x64, SMB pins 5&6 covered or else I couldn't get into the dell card admin, 4x2TB Samsung FE4 drives.

I have a perc 6i card that has 6.1 firmware on it. When i try to update the firmware in windows, I either get an error stating that "this update package is not compatible with your system configuration" or "this update package cannot be executed under the current operating system". So I made a bootable USB drive, and tried to update the firmware from there (because running this in Windows caused several 16bit error messages), and that said it could not find the controller. So I have been unable to update the firmware.

I finally got the LSI megaraid installed and that seemed to be working, but the foreground initialization took 16 hours before it said one of the hard drives is now degraded. The array never did initialize.

I have also tried running Dell OMSA 6.5 but I can't login due to an internal error.

Ugh, sorry to make this long, but this has been a very frustrating raid card upgrade.

Can anyone confirm if the perc 5/i runs ok without the RAM installed? Thanks

Have you tried taping the 4 and 5 pins on the card as it says on page 1 of this thread?

Yes I have tired the pin-mod on the card with both systems I have tried the card in. It makes no difference mad.gif

Spent a while reading this thread and not found an answer to my question, but lots of answers to ones I no doubt will have later.

I am in the process of building a new server which will have around 18 disks in it, this will be a replacement for my old but faithful Dell SC1420. Anyhow the server will eventually have 2 x PERC 5i controllers in it with an 8 SATA disk raid 5 array each on them, then 2 disks mirrored for OS off the on-board SATA controller.. My question is what would be the best motherboard to support 2 x PERC 5i cards. The case I have will support up to extended ATX so not an issue with space. I have always tended to get Gigabyte boards, just want one that will work well with the PERC cards and has on-board graphics.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

What's the best raid card for 8 ssd's in raid 0? Also is there a max bandwith? Like after 4 ssd's will it still scale well in read and writes?

Thanks in advance.
