PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 602

Hi there, just got a PERC 6/i and it seems to be working witht he blue cable from the picture above, but not with the red one. Sadly i need the red one to connect to my backplanes as they have only SATA ports and a sepereate power connector.

Anyone any ideas, why it does not work with the red cable (test without backplanes, directly attached to the drives).

the cable that goes to the backplane is a crossover one, it only works with a backplane...

Hey kcinick,

can you eleborate on this?

The blue cable works directly, therefore it does not require a backplane.

The red ones directly connected to the HDDs with an additional power plug do not work AND
the red ones connected to an SATA backplane (Zalman ZM-HDR1) do not work either.

If the red one does not work. What cable can i buy to make it work?

Okay based on your hint i did some testing and yes indeed: The Up/Down Data is swapped for the SATA Pins. I think this is what you mean by Crossover.

How do i now find such a cable? Noone on ebay/amazon specifies it in the desciption!

this one work with the disk directly attached to it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/140605010864?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

and this one is for attach to a backplane:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-32-P-SFF-8484-to-4-SATA-7P-backplane-SAS-Cable-50cm-/130571129104?pt=US_Drive_Cables_dapters&hash=item1e66a55110

as u can see there seems to be identical, but they not, the both are from the same seller, if you are unsure ask him which cable will work for you.

PS: sorry my poor english, cya...

Works for me: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-32-Pin-SAS-SFF-8484-to-4-Port-SATA-7-Pin-HDD-1M-Cable-/251120559127?pt=US_Drive_Cables_dapters&hash=item3a77f3a417

Hi everyone,

I am trying to connect HP backplane to Perc 6i using sff-8087 to sff-8484 cable and although drives work, they are detected and fully working, backplane is not detected, and neither of LED indicators (activity, fail, locate) are working.

I have tried so many things and nothing helped. Cables that I am using do have sidebands part and I can verify that backplane can talk SGPIO over them (If I connect sidebands to motherboard SGPIO I can control the leds by software).

Now did anyone got their backplane to fully connect with Perc 6i (or 5i for that matter) in such way that leds are working? Activity blinking, and locate led can be toggled with MegaCli? (or from bios)?

I did however go to that extreme to check all 6 sideband signals on SFF8484 with oscilloscope - and got absolutely no activity there from PERC (in comparison to motherboard SGPIO which rides really wild, recognizable digital I/O pattern).

Confused and desperate, looking for any clues..

Question. What is a backplane in reference to the raid card and such. This one is to Sean. You recommended the perc 5i in a htpc thread where you also recommended cables and a heatsink.. I bought the perc the cables and the heat sink. Did you realise how tall that sink is? Also these is there a preffered mb for these that you can still purchase. Does the z68 and win7 work well with these? Should i just do another server style htpc build? I am very new to raid and defiantly new to controller cards. planning on raid 5 for mvk strorage.

Yea, it is a beast lol. I don't have issues with that size myself, it was just a recommendation.

It worked fine in windows 7 on my z68 mobo.

That is what I am mainly using mine for. I will finally get to make my array Monday when my 2 extra 2TB HDDs come in the mail. biggrin.gif

Seem like great minds think a like. Now to find room on my case for every thing. Never thought I would have filled up the haf922 the way I did... That is why the cooler kind bothered me i guess. looks like it's needed though.
