PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 608

Have you tried updating the controller bios to 5.2.2-0072 A09? That will resolve quite a few recognition issues? What do you mean by the "Not blinking LED"? If there is a Green LED Blinking on the Card, that indicates a Dirty Cache and as a result possibly a hardware issue. It is also not supported to have 2 Perc 5is in system although in many cases it does work. On some systems however, it can cause PCI Bus issues.

EDIT - Please post as detailed a description as possible in your native language if you are having difficulty describing it in English.

No, I haven't updating because the WIN 2008 server can't see that card.
I tried only alone the bad controller, but it's unsuccessfully. Cant see the WIN.

On this controller has 2 led, right? These are none light or blink.

Until one week before these 2 controllers working well in one computer, with 12 disks.

This is my card as it was when it arrived. 512mb cache, new BBU and an over-sized fan.

I needed an additional cable to I just ordered two of these

And I wasn't happy with the fan so I ordered one of these while I was at it.

Well, after getting everything up and running, loading the latest firmware, and some fine tuning, I ended up getting a PE2950 for free. So I decided to move my ESXi to the PE2950 and make the box into a dedicated FreeNAS box running RAIDZ. So I'm selling the PERC 6e and all the cables. If anyone is interested, I'll put the ebay link up here once I get it listed.

Well, I just scored a PERC 5/i on ebay with bracket and BBU and 256mb memory module for $28.98 shipped, I feel like I got a good deal.

I just have a couple small questions though.

1.) Windows 7 64-bit support, I've read at a glance in other threads that this card will be natively supported, in win7 setup, by windows7 64-bit. Is this true? False? If false: Could someone point me to win7 x64 drivers, please?
EDIT: I found the win7 drivers linked back on page 604, so disregard this part.

2.) I'm looking at cables on ebay... before I buy, could someone confirm these cables will work with this please? Also if they don't, could someone point me to a place on the interwebs to buy the proper cables? (A place that accepts paying through paypal, specifically.)

These are the cables in question: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281024536243

3.) Also, Am I to understand we can connect 8 x SATA-II/III drives (I'm sure a Sata-III drive would step-down to Sata-II speeds automatically) to this with full hardware raid5/10 support if we use two of these cables (shown above) ?

And not a question, but if all of this is true, has anyone tested 4, 6, or 8 SSD's in raid on this thing yet? Also, has anyone tested this thing on an x58 motherboard for compatibility?

I currently have 6 x Western Digital 160gb hard drives, standard 7200 RPM 8mb buffer drives, I might consider switching to 8 x SSD's or 8 x Velociraptors though, if this thing will do it. I've been wanting to use raid5, but as you all know, raid5 using the onboard ICH10R on my x58 motherboard is SLOOOOWWWWWWW, so I've been using Raid-0 with the onboard instead and just making weekly backups to an external usb 3.0 drive.

#2 those look to work very similar to the ones i got. i would recommend getting longer ones if possible as the ones i got are the same length and i dont think they would reach all the way to the drives if you use the port all the way to the back to the drives turned. may be fine for the front tho.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

#3 should be able to put all 8 drives into a single array.

my card is running on my sig server board which is a G41 chip set so i would assume a x58 would be fine, as for the speed of ssd's and others i think this card maxes out at like 500mbps reed/wright.

Thanks for the information and the picture, I'm using an Antec 1200 chassis with the interface-connector side of the hard drives facing backwards into the case and the raid card will go in the center, so I don't think distance would be a problem. I'm just mainly concerned with.. I've read in this thread some people have "cross over" cables that won't work with indiviual SATA drives and some cables will and I don't know which cables do and which don't, and would like to make 100% sure I have cables that will work from the get-go.

well in that pic the drives ar mounted in a 5.25 drive bay converter so the face into the case now if i were to use them on the lower drive area where its turned in mot sure it they could reach.

.. so I'm sorry to repeat this post but could someone please post me to a link on ebay or some other site that has an exact SAS-to-4x-SATA cables for the PERC 5i that are guaranteed to work 100% with this adapter?

I've been searching on the internet on other sites about this card being used in desktop machines, and I found a reference to THIS cable set, could someone confirm these work with the 5i before I order?

Thank you very much, sir. I'll probably pick up one of these to start with and another later. smile.gif

I don't know if anyone will see this edit but...

These cables listed here, I'm wondering... since this is a SAS raid controller, if I were to buy some used 15k rpm SAS drives, would I be able to connect them with this cable listed above here from the previous post, or would I have to buy a different cable?

Using these on my newly purchased PERC 5i raid controller, that is.
