My OS drive is a 146gb 15k 2.5" drive, that is what will be moving to SSD - no array, just a single drive.

Then definitely go with the O/B Intel Z77 SATAIII controller for the SSD.

Hey all,

Thanks for the great guide, just installed a Perc5i with 4x2TB drives. I have a BBU, but it is not showing up, i.e.
BBU: NO
is shown in the MegaRAID manager. If the battery is low, and not simply a dud, do I expect it to still be recognized?

Thanks,
Cory

Hi there,

After reading through this thread for an hour or so I haven't found my answer, going to keep reading but for now I'm going to post my question and maybe someone has a solution for me.

So I bought a Perc 6/i card awhile ago, set it up in a whitebox ESXi 5.1 configuration with (3) 2TB Caviar Blacks. Awesome! The tape on the pin trick worked well and I was up and running just fine.

At this point I want to expand the array; I purchased another 2TB drive, plopped it in, and tried to expand it through the Perc 6i bios (control+R). No dice, can only add a hot spare this way.

So at this point I'm looking to expand my array in any way shape or form... it seems Open Manage is not an option, if flashing the firmware is an option then extending the drive through LSI bios is an option I'd be open to that but all I see are instructions for the Perc 5/i card.

Anyway, if anyone can help me, point me in the right direction, or suggest another RAID card with a BBU I'd be happy because right now I'm just spinning my wheels.

Thanks in advance!

What RAID level are you using for your array ?
I am stating the obvious just in case: RAID-0 cannot be expanded.

The manual for Perc6/i can be found here, in case you need it:

it would be the same as raid 5 and expanding it. the only thing i could see to note would having the card rebuild with mre drives as that can take quite a while to do.

If you're using windows on the computer with the array you should be able to expand it via the MegaRAID Storage Manager for windows. There's a link on the first page of this thread, but I'll re-post it here for your convenience.

takes like 2-3 days for a rebuild.
