PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 644

Add your new drive and let the array rebuild. After that, make the foreign drive offline if you can, and remove it from the system. As long as the rebuild completes, you should be fine and won't lose any data. Format the foreign drive using another system or an external enclosure for safety's sake.

As always have a good backup prior to performing major operations on any RAID array. We can't be held liable should another drive fail during the rebuild.

How will the array rebuild if only 1 of the 3 drives is present? I don't know much about how a RAID array works, but I thought with RAID 5 array only 1 drive can fail. With 1 failure and 1 being foreign, aren't I down 2 drives?

Can anybody provide a *reliable* source for replacement batteries? Just bought a battery listed as "new" from eBay and of course when I install it I find it has 350mAh capacity remaining and was made in 2007. Obviously pulled from a used server.

For bonus points: why is the computer battery industry so full of scammers?

Thanks!

Perc 5/i is the card, FW: 1.03.50-0461.

The array is RAID5, with 3x750GB. One of the drives failed. Drive #1 and #3 are ready and functioning, but #3 is being seen as foreign to the array. I have one spare 750GB that I will be putting in the server so I can swap out the failed drive, but what do I do about the foreign drive? I would prefer not to lose any data.

All the drives are Seagate ST3750330AS's.

I've never done an array rebuild so I'm not sure how to proceed. I assume it's straight forward, but this 3rd driving being foreign is throwing me for a loop.

Thanks so much for all the help!

You should be able to just remove the offending hard drive, and plug in the replacement drive and it should rebuild automatically on it's own. I did that this past Saturday with my PERC 5/i, I unplugged the sata data cable for a hard drive, waited for the software to show DEGRADED, then plugged it in to another drive and the rebuild started on it's own and I didn't have to do anything.

Tom, if one drive is foreign and the other 2 are normal, that means you have 2 good drives and one bad. The foreign drive should be the failed drive. Just to be on the safe side, that is why I said to keep the foreign drive in until the array rebuilt using the new drive.

Sorry if I'm not being clear. I have one normal drive, one foreign drive, and one failed drive. The foreign drives status is "okay" as in a healthy, working drive, but for some reason it is foreign to the RAID configuration. I never swapped it out or changed SATA ports either.

Can you boot/access the data on the array? If not, you need to import the foreign configuration using the Controller bios. You will not be able to rebuild the array until you deal with the foreign configuration. The foreign configuration just indicates there is an inconsistency between the drive metadata, it does not mean you have 2 HDDs failed in most cases. The failed HDD most likely caused the meta-data across the drives to become inconsistent, resulting in the controller thinking you have 2 raid Virtual Disks, when in reality you only have 1.

Does you array look something like this:

X = drive number

HDD X - Online
HDD X- Failed
HDD X - Foreign

ESXi 5.1.0 with Perc 5/i (battery is not installed yet).

ESXi is boot from a CF card.
I have a RAID1 with two 1TB disc (system disc where I have located the VM`s).

I installed ESXi and created four virtuell machines for testing the VM`S is located on the RAID1 array.
Everything worked great, but not top performance sine I don`t have battery yet on the raid controller.

Suddenly today after 20-30 hours after I installed ESXi, have I got some problems I don`t understand.

1. When I try to open console on the VM`s i only got a error saying that the config file not exisst or something...
2. When I checked under Health status the Perc 5i controller was not listed any longer...
3. I tried to restartt the computer and now the Perc 5i controller is listed under Health Status and the raid is OPTIMAL. However the virtuels machines have now got status name (inaccessible.)
If I check the log files after I tried to open the the virtuell machine is this listed "Configuration file for unknown 1 cannot be found".
4. The storage is not listed any longer under summary where all storage shall show. When I try to created a storage on the erray I only got a error (properly because is already a partition their?).

Picture 1:
http://temp.dynamitt.net/div/RAID1.JPG
Here can you see that the Array is showing 931 Gigabye (3,64 TB Array, have I detached just for test)

Picture 2:
http://temp.dynamitt.net/div/RAID2.JPG
Here can you see that the storage is dispear.....
Here shall it be one 931 storage called system....

Picture 3:
http://temp.dynamitt.net/div/RAID3.JPG
Copy from /dev/disk/ listed

I can add that this has happend two days ago also, I deleted the arrays on the RAID and reinstalled ESXi,
and then reinstalled evertything. Now the same problem is back explained above.

Firmversion is Dell 5.2.2
00_37_V0_04_SMIS_VMware_Installer (LSI VIB to get health status from Perc 5i in ESXi)

Anybody have some Idea? Can the reason be that I don`t have battery installed?

If you need more information just ask.

Thank you everybody!

So weird thing just happened. The failed drive is now being shown as Unconfigured & Good. You were correct in your assumption, the array did look like that.

Now, according to the Dell software (SAS RAID Storage Manager 1.18) I have this:

Physical Drive 0 - Online
Physical Drive 1 - Unconfigured & Good (Was Failed)
Physical Drive 2 - Unconfigured & Good (Was Foreign, though I'm assuming Unconfigured & Good means Foreign).

In the software I have an operation that sounds like it might work: "Replace Missing Physical Drive", then I have an option to select with Array (Array 0) and Row Index 1 or Row Index 2. How should I proceed? Or is this not the next course of action.

Thanks for the help so far!

And no, I cannot access the data on my array.

e:
I booted into the Perc BIOS and sure enough, the two lower drives were "foreign". I did an import of the foreign configuration and now the array is degraded. I booted into windows and it's all there! To get the array un-degraded, do I reinitialize it?

I tried to downgrade the firmware to 5.2.1 and also done the pin mode (blended pin 5 and 6) and reinstall everything. Same thing happens system come up and I startt to create virtuel machine and after 1-2 hours the storage is not avaible.

Storage are listed in summary:
http://temp.dynamitt.net/div/RAID4.JPG

As you can see the storage is listed in summary, but is it not avaible if try to start a virtuel machine it says that the config file not exsist.

Raid is showting as OPTIMAL in the raid bios.

So for some reason is the raid array lost for ESXi and this have happend three times now (I have tried to reinstall everyting three times).

I have attached the log files this time:
http://temp.dynamitt.net/div/hostd.log.txt
http://temp.dynamitt.net/div/vmkernel.log.txt
http://temp.dynamitt.net/div/vpxa.log.txt

I have big problem to understand what the problem is.

I will be verry thank full for advise here.
