I read that again. My mistake Sean. To poster - the H800 is useless to most people unless you have a SAS based DAS storage chassis that does not already have a controller. If you don't know what that means, you do not want an H800, you want an H700 unless you plan on doing some serious modding.

they are in raid 5

Just installed ubuntu instead to try that on the system ssd, but when the perc is connected the screen is just black. Dont even get the perc bios startup now!

Im going nuts over here :/ Why wont the system even start!?

EDIT: I AM RETARDED! Accendtly hit the monitor cable so it was disconnected biggrin.gif Everything seems to work for now atleast! Fast boots atleast..

Hey Guys,

I've found the info in this thread very useful. I inherited a 2950 w/ SAS disks and wanted to do the following because I read it was the easiest way to get a solution similar to shared storage:

Pass Through 5/i from ESXi to FreeNAS
Export iSCSI back to ESX
Use as shared storage & vmotion

When I boot freenas, it gets stuck at the "mfi0: Megaraid SAS driver Ver 4.23" for the longest time, ends up skipping it and boots normally. Reading a bit more, it seems 5i cannot do pass through.

Is this possible? Will installing LSI firmware make it possible?

Thanks

I see on first page of the thread that for the PERC 6/i: Latest firmware version: A14 6.3.1-0003 (as of September 5, 2012)

I see on Dell's website, that there is a newer firmware 6.3.3-0002 A00 (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=F96NR). Are you using that newer firmware or the older listed on the first page of the forum? Any concern with the new firmware?

The only fix listed for that new version is "Fixes an issue where the user might see a misleading error message stating that “Number of devices exceeded the maximum limit of devices per quad". So probably it is not too critical to upgrade.

I'm just wondering why they have incremented the numerical version (6.3.1 -> 6.3.3), but have reset the A14 to A00 (in previous releases I think the Ax has always been incremented at each release) ...

I don't know how serious modding I'll do wink.gif I have few different SAS Expanders - IBM, Intel, HP.
For example - AXX6DRV3GEXP - "works" with PERC 5/e - is on the list of connected devices wink.gif so should work with H800 wink.gif
But because of constant lack of time ...

Ok, please excuse me if this has been discussed before but this is an extremely large thread and I couldn't find an answer in the OP.

I have a server with this card with the following specs (it's just a file server, it's kinda old):
Q6600
8GB DDR2
4x2TB RAID5 on the PERC 5/i
Windows Server 2008R2

I realized that I'm running firmware version 1.03.50-0461 dated May 21st 2008... tongue.gif

Looking over the OP, I see the latest firmware is either "A09 5.2.2-0072 (as of September 5, 2012)" or "7.0.1-0083: (as of September 5, 2012)" depending on where you look in that post. I take it 7.0.1 is the latest LSI firmware and the A09 5.2.2 is the latest Dell firmware?

Either way, I'd like to go to the latest firmware IF I can possibly gain any useful features and/or performance. I would also need to do this on a card that hosts an existing array and obviously not lose the data.

So, can this be done? If so, can someone clear up my questions about which firmware is which from above? Thank you!

The 7.0.1 is the LSI firmware and it offers a LOT better performance than the Dell. If your drives are marked as foreign after firmware upgrade (chances are they will be) just import foreign configuration and you will be on your way without any data loss.

Thanks! If you could, would you be able to go into any more detail on exactly what that entails? If my drives do indeed show up as "foreign", what configuration would I be importing into what? The software I'm using is the LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager 11.08.03.04.

Yes this.

You sold me on updating to LSI firmware, just want to make sure that I can still access the data.
