PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 684

Does the 2950/1950 perc 5/i battery charge when the machine is off but connected to the mains? I need to charge a couple of completely discharged batteries but I don't want to turn on the server just to do that.

How about turning the server on and entering the bios and staying there in case it doesn't work?

To start off im new to this forum and i thank you to all who have contributed to this vast thread of great information on the Perc 5 / perc 6 raid controllers... I am currently in the process adding a perc 6i to an older pc it uses a Asus Maximus Formula MB. I have yet to find anything on this expansive thread pertaining to this but i could have looked over it...

Anyway I have installed the perc 6i for a set of storage drives but my OS drive is still plugged into the MB Sata. When i installed the OS i had the bios in the RAID setting.. Now that i have initialized my data raid on the perc 6 the MB can no longer see the hard drive's plugged into the MB as long as the BIOS has it set in raid mode. When i change the bios to AHCI mode it sees the hard drive for the OS and starts to boot but i end up with a BSOD part way into the boot process.. I have attempted the Registry edits to make it switch from raid mode to ahci but it doesn't seem to be working.

May main question is it typical for the Perc 6i to interfere with the mobo raid? Have i messed up a setting while making the raid on my Perc 6i that is causing the problem? I ask this because if i unplug the drives from the card but leave the card inplace it see's the MB raid just fine? Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thanks

first thing I would try is go into the PERC6 firmware and mark all volumes as not bootable. Sounds like the boot code on the PERC6 is conflicting with the onboard RAID firmware.

Actually there are quite a lot of motherboards that will only allow one raid bios to go through to the OS. Either onboard SATA ports in raid mode, or an add-on raid controller card. Sometimes some good boards will just gracefully ignore one of the controllers (random which one is ignored) and go with the other. Sometimes you get crashes like that. It can be difficult to configure sometimes.

My big 6 core i7 computer for example, I have both the PERC 5/i in raid mode, and the onboard SATA in raid mode and it works, but during booting I get stuck at a black screen doing nothing for like 2 minutes then suddenly out comes "1 Logical Drive(s) found" appears and it boots normally.

Bottom line is consumer desktop motherboards most of them act strangely when trying to deal with multiple "raid bios" 's running at the same time, you may have to put the OS drive in raid mode (even if you only have 1 drive) and re-install windows with the perc disconnected / removed, then install the perc later, maybe. I'm not sure really. Every board behaves differently with more that 1 raid bios running so it requires some experimentation to figure it out.

Thank you for the answers guys. What I ended up having to do was turn off the raid bios function in the perc 6 controller now everything seems to be working together just fine.

Thanks again!

EDIT: Work which it seems HeindeR is already doing.. biggrin.gif

It turns out it was not much work at all to get the backplane working. The only thing I had to do was supply the 12V to the power connector.
After that I could see and configure the to disk I had in the bays. I found that the fdd connector fitted in the first section of the power connector.
So I used that to connect the backplane to my power supply.

Be aware that the red and the black wire at the top are not connected to anything. They should be removed or also connected to 12V and ground.
This was just a setup to test. Because I had no airflow over the perc I only left the system on for a short moment, but it seemed to be working fine.

Disclaimer: I tested this on a system I could loose, try this on your own risk.

Is there any use or need to flash the Dell 6i with a/the LSI megaraid firmware (if there is one)? are the 5i and 6i considered hardware raid?

Yes - if you need bigger strip size - but there is no going back - you can't use larger strip size on Dell firmware.

If you mean 5i and 6i - not 5iR or 6iR - then yes - they are fully hardware raid cards:
