PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 84

Kudos for having the best Perc 5 thread on the 'net guys.

I'm looking at getting one but have a problem. As it would be used on some pretty speedy SSD's and given that I've heard that some of these come with 400MHz, 533MHz, and 800MHz IOP333's, I obviously want to make sure to get the 800MHz version... but how do you know which is which?

I haven't been able to find any information on the web about this, but some people say they do use all 3 speed variants of the 333. Any ideas?

Edit: Oh, and yes - I know that I'd be better off with something using the new 34x series IOP but look at it this way: it's still better than on-board.

How many slots does that take? 4? I need everyone of my expansion slots...

Would you be able to like us to the info about the different IOP333 versions? I know Intel does sell them in different speeds but have not found any info about which the PERC 5/i actually has.
Once again...

Yo

Registered here as I had the same problem as Manyak did last year, only I managed to fix it.

I think it had something to do with the flash that I did within Vista x64, as when I first used the card it turned up in the LSI raid manager; I flashed it with a higher version and it didn't.

Rather than tempt fate I made a bootable USB and did it the dos way, and it came back to life. As it turns out in the meantime I found a newer version of the rom, so perhaps the 61 version was dodgy.. but 64 worked via usb/dos and everything is working fine now.

Symptoms were exactly the same as Manyaks, so thought i'd post it here.

All the best

Mikey

Ok so I can now confirm that SAS to eSATA cables will work.

UNFORTUNATELY I seem to have hosed my RAID 0 OS drive when I went to set up my RAID 5 drive. I started a new RAID config with the RAID 0 cables unattached, rebooted, then saw it was detected as a foreign drive.
I then deleted the partition and started it again as RAID5. Now it shows 2 RAID 5s. I guess I deleted it, but I never initialized.
I'm going to try to recover, but I think all is lost. Kinda sucks, but if anyone has any suggestions before I reinstall I'm all ears.

Nice. I'd like to see that!

I don't know if anyone is running separate RAID 0 (OS disk) and RAID5 (data), but when I started to install Vista x64 with both connected and turned on it gives me an error message that says the drive doesn't seem to be bootable, and suggests to make it bootable in the controller's BIOS.

If you try to continue it then says that the selected drive doesn't meet the installation criteria......weird.

The work around was to power down my enclosure and disconnect the SAS cable, then reboot and try again.

I just ordered one of these cards and am about ready to get to work on it. I've read the majority of the thread but think that a recap may be in order.

1) The processor runs very hot because the heatsink on it is intended for a forced-airflow case where it would be sufficient. The mounting points for this heatsink are a bit strange such that very coolers work without creative modification or epoxy.

2) SAS->SATA cables are necessary. SFF-8484 is the name of the wide SAS connector, so SFF-8484 to 4x 7-pin SATA is ideal. These are expensive unless you order them from China.

3) Generally, the cards include 256MB of ECC DDR2-533. This can be upgraded to 512MB at the most. Unbuffered memory is ideal.

4) Many fans use the Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II HSF for northbridges because it can use the mounts on the processor. Unforunately, this makes the card occupy several slots.

5) Using this card, RAID5 performance is almost as good as RAID0 performance.

Now for a few questions:

Q) What about RAID6? Can it be done on this card? Does the LSI firmware include support for this?

Q) What about backplanes? Can I just pick any old 3-in-2 SATA-II model and stuff it into my case? Anyone have a model they recommend? (I'm using a Lian Li PC-A05B, the small-format ATX Mid-Tower.)

Q) Should I use ECC memory on the motherboard too? I mean, the machine I'm preparing is going to be a home-server but I don't want it to fail on me. I would like to add an AM2+ Opteron Quad-Core to it sometime soon but not yet.

Q) RAID5 + hot spare or RAID6?

Q) What about using a pair of 2.5" HDDs (RAID1) in an external 3.5" bay, using the onboard SATA-fakeRAID for the OS partition? Would this be worth the effort?

For Reference:
AMD Athlon X2 5200+ w/ stock HSF @ stock speed
Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H motherboard
G.Skill 4GB DDR2-800
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB (OS)
2x WD1001FALS 1TB, upgrading to 6x total eventually, in a RAID5 or RAID6.

See any problems?

The raid should be done expanding at around 9 tonight, i will probably be to drunk to post benchies tonight but will first thing tomorrow.

Also my current setup is a Raid 0 OS and a Raid 5 Data
The only issue i have is that any time i do anything hardware wise my bios always flips over to booting from the perc5. I have to manually flip it back to boot off the onboard raid 0.

*EDIT*
