PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 96

I have test it anyway... Raid0 3 x OCZ Solid series, 128kb, write back.
I've got very very poor performance, around 140Mb/s.

Everest reports my PERC controller as PCI device so I think it's an bottleneck issue with my motherboard Asus P5KR which only "emulates" PCIe second slot. I'm getting a new motherboard...

What do you think?

Could you confirm me the followings :

- Can I mix 2 different arrays (for example : 2x 500 GB for system in raid 0 et 6x 1TB in raid 5 for data)
- What would be the best cluster size for
a) general purpose (os, games, docs)
b) video files (I plan to ripp my BR on hard disks)
- What is the best cache option (write back, ....) as I have no BBU ?

Thanks a lot for the information.
Alexandre.
Yes you can run 2 different arrays using any combination of 8 SATA drives. I'm running 4x500GB RAID 0 and 4x500 RAID 5. I have only tested 64kB and 128kB stripe sized. Either one should suffice for your needs.
I too handle a large amount of media files, and I copy from my RAID0 to RAID5 at about 215MB/s in Vista.....good enough for me.
I would just go with 64kB stripe setup on both of your arrays.

(sorry for my english, i'm french)

No problems

Yes, you do have to do the smbus trick. I used nail polish but the pcie bus bit through, and I ended up using electrical tape. Other than that, works perfectly: i'm using the lsi firmware and drivers, so I can't comment on the Dell drivers.

I've tested with my x58 asus p6t and haven't had any issues. The smbus pin trick still needs to be performed, but beyond that, everything seems A-OK.

There are plenty of small heatsinks that can be used on the Perc5/i but I try to avoid thermal adhesive products since they either a) work very poorly (not enough conductivity, not enough adhesion), or b) are completely permanent. The last thing I want is my insufficient cooling attempt to be permanent glued to a chipset. I wouldn't be able to move up to a larger cooler very easily.

Has anyone tried using a GPU-style cooler on this card?
I had the same feelings concerning thermal adhesive, which is why I wanted to find a suitable heatsink that used the old style clamps. Yes, the heatsink is tall, and I had to move the card up a slot on my board, but I don't think you'd be losing any real cooling power if you trimmed or bent the fins. Even after long periods of time, my heatsink barely gets warm, where i've burned myself on the stock heatsink

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeird.

I just got a new motherboard since my old one died. I had a Asus P5e X38 which blew out. I just got an Asus Rampage Formula X48. The boards are virtually identical. The only differences is a better binned Northbridge, more fan headers, and some onboard buttons.

Now the weird thing.... my PERC 5/i works without the pin mod. However, my Pro/1000 PT NIC no longer works. However, if I do pin mod on the NIC... it works. It must be something with Intel processors on the NIC and RAID card.....

Yea that's really weird considering that I don't have to use the pin mod on my board. I have a MF that I flashed to a RF. Have you tried both NICs? Maybe one of mine doesn't work and I don't know it.....I have it disabled in device manager.

I have the BBU!
I have ordered a new Foxconn P43As motherboard with 2 PCIe 2.0 16x , hopefully will solve my bottleneck. This motherboard is very cheap and I hope good for some mild OC, I don't want to spend more for now...

Do you have the updated firmware? Post your benchmarks? I doubt your issue is a motherboard issue.
