How to flash your HD4870

Thread Starter
I got tired of not being able to go over 790 on the core through CCC without messing the fan speed up. I browsed the web trying to figure out how to flash the 4870 so i could achieve higher clocks and fan speeds. It is really simple but i couldn't find all the information in one place so it took me a while. I figured i would list the info here so if anyone else wanted to do this it would be less time consuming.

*I suggest uninstalling drivers before flashing

*TURN OFF OVERDRIVE BEFORE FLASHING.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- go here and download the bios: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/152/images/4870.bin

- Next you will need Radeon Bios Editor v1.12 to tweak the bios: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...tor_v1.12.html

- And finally you need Winflash 2.0.1.2 to flash the card: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...h_2.0.1.2.html[/SIZE]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Open up the Radeon Bios Editor and open up the downloaded bios file.

I set my clocks for 840/1000 but i had to back it down to 815/1000 until i get the nerve to up the voltage. I noticed minor hiccups if the memory wasnt all the same so i settled for 1000 on the memory, not wanting to burn it out by running it higher constantly.

heres a picture of the fan settings

.

-Save the Bios.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now all that's needed is to flash the card.

-Open up ATIwinflash and load the Image(bios).

- Program the image. Restart.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See, easy

I did it and it worked awsome with the fan and I prob should have left it at that. I did try messing with the GPU and memory settings and was trying some tweaking, but ran into an issue when I flashed it about the 4th time. Now I get an error VBIOS not found when trying to flash even the stock one back...

I did some searching and it sounds like I corrupted it or something. Anyways. What I hear is that I will have to use ATIFlash in dos and force it to fix. Unless anyone knows anything else to try. I am at work so I can't play around atm.

Currently, that's a poor substitute for fan control. From what I can tell, it locks your fan at a certain speed. Also, you can't OC past CCC's limits with Overdrive on and Overdrive is required for the xml fix.

OP, may want to add in to TURN OFF OVERDRIVE BEFORE FLASHING. You need the stock bios on the card to disable overdrive, and if it's on, it will reset your clocks if they're higher than the Overdrive limit.

Also, for those that don't want to download a bios for fear of incompatibility, you can dump whatever bios you currently have and edit that one using GPU-Z by clicking the icon next to BIOS Version.

Yes, we know this. Flashing the bios is so we can overclock past the CCC allowed overlclock and still have our fan speed at a certain percentage.

Just an update: I was able to update my BIOS in windows using the above. Per my above post, I think I was getting an error because the card was flashed back to stock settings and the file I was trying to use was just to change the fan settings and for some reason it wouldn't allow me to just do that.

Anyways, I got home from work and tried again. I set my normal 2d speed to 500-1000 and 825-1000 in 3D. I set my fan to start at 25% and it goes faster the hotter it gets. So I ran 3D mark and it AVG 49 deg.

Another note: I uninstalled Catalyst and just kept the display driver when doing the flash and this testing.

At this setting so far my score is with just the display driver installed and no Catalyst:
  • 3DMark Score 15541
  • SM 2.0 Score 5997
  • SM 3.0 Score 7228
  • CPU Score 4641

vs stock
  • 3DMark Score 14766
  • SM 2.0 Score 5587
  • SM 3.0 Score 6855
  • CPU Score 4591

Well i had to turn my clocks down to 810/1000. I tried upping the voltage to 1.32 but that didnt help stability at all. Maybe i have a dud of a card
