Hey, I know this article is a bit old, but I figured I'd post something about it because my good friend who works at Turbine just confirmed this today.
So, Like the title states, the good people over at Turbine Entertainment, the makers of "The Lord Of the Rings Online" apparently are working on a Harry Potter MMO.
I can't find an article that names Turbine as the developer, but I'm about 95% certain that its Turbine... my buddy wouldn't lie to me.
Note: The pictures in that article aren't of the game they're working on.

Edit1: Ahhh, here we go, figures after I already post it I find an article that points to turbine...

There is a rumor buzzing around Blog Hogwarts, Pottersphere and Snitch Seeker, three Harry Potter-focused news and forum sites, that Warner Brothers is working on an MMORPG for Harry Potter. According to these fan-sites, Warner Brothers has said: "The notion of creating a Harry Potter multi-player online role playing game is something that we’ve been discussing at Warner Bros. for a number of years and continue to explore. We are currently investigating the possibility of creating our own MMORPG, but unfortunately do not have any further details to share at this time." MMORPG’s, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, are computer games where large numbers of players can participate and interact in a virtual world. Some of the most popular MMORPG’s include Age of Conan and World of Warcraft. This rumor is obviously highly speculative, but if it turns out true, the question is whether or not it will succeed. Harry Potter as a franchise is widely popular and successful, supporting a huge industry of merchandise and accessories, but there is a possibility that an MMORPG could be subject to harsh criticism if it does not live up to fans’ high expectations. |

There has been a good deal of press lately about the $40 million in funding Turbine recently received. But what didn't get looked into deeply was who gave them that cash and why. If you follow the money, we think you'll find all roads lead to Hogwarts. Turbine is a privately held gaming company that specializes in launching and maintaining games from well-known brands, Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online, specifically. Time Warner is one of the new investment partners in this latest round of financing for Turbine. They also own Warner Bros. Studios which owns not only the film rights to The Lord of the Rings (and upcoming Hobbit prequel), but also holds the video game publishing rights to the Harry Potter franchise which also just happens to be the biggest movie franchise in box office history. But with only two more films left to release and no more books from J.K. Rowling on the horizon, what are they to do to keep their cash cow from going out to pasture? It looks like they are backing up the Brink's truck to the front door of the MMORPG developer who has a track record for publishing games based on other people's literary works. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out where this is going especially since Warner Bros. confirmed to a popular Potter fan site they are considering a Potter MMO. Only time will tell if this is true, but being fans of the Harry Potter franchise combined with our love of Turbine's focus on pushing the boundaries of social gaming, we couldn't be happier if we were on the right track. |
