[gamasutra] Quelling The Rage: Carmack and Willits Speak Out

Thread Starter
Funny title pun, if anything this will incite rage rather than quell it.. I'll just paste a tidbit because it's five pages long.

Quote:
Any chance of id products being on Steam in the future?

TW: Well, we have our catalog...

You have your catalog on there, but in terms of newer games - because Activision put some of that stuff up there, but I know EA often goes for the EA Link thing; but also, Valve is working with EA Partners, so, it's kind of a big weird soup, and I'm wondering...

JC: Right now, we are looking at it - for Rage - as the consoles are the most important "legs" that this project is on. It's definitely shipping on PC as well, and we would be willing to entertain different distribution notions on that, but we would probably leave that up to EA's decision on thereabout.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/featur...nd_.php?page=1

So Carmack has joined the 'I take it up the behind from Sony and MS, we do console ports now' club, and they're going to use EA's useless digital distribution scheme rather than Steam..

Seems id is turning into Epic 2.0.

Here's more console praise from Carmack

PC gamers really boil my meatballs. I like how PC Gamers think Devs show them disrespect because they have priority for consoles.

Good for them, there is more money in consoles. And with the recent attitude of PC Gamers it doesn't surprise me.

PC Gamers whine too much, they complain the game isn't perfect. Then they throw their dummy away and pirate the damn thing.

PC Gamers in general only have themselves to blame for this sorry state of affairs. If I was a business I would be doing the exact same thing.

But the thing is, is there a difference any more?

a Console is a system dedecated to playing games.

A computer is a device that can play games, and is a console and then some.

Console games are being torrented like mad, developers are developing console games with the mind set of "hey if there are glitchs, I can just patch it later".

If developers want to stop piracy, making games better has got to be a big priority; I want it to work out of the box and work great (hint hint, ATI and Nvidia, having drivers crash or perform poorly definately shifts more people to not care about your PC hardware, and more towards consoles.). Heck, I pretty much stopped playing Lost planet after I swapped an 8800GT for a 9800GTX, and after changing the resolution it not only played like crap, but lowering the settings cause the game to say my hardware was inadequate, and promptly crashed.

From what I have seen, the game companies are getting better with their ports; they are more stable, and are starting to change things enough so that it doesn't feel like your running an Xbox360 emulator or anything. However with graphics moving as they are, no one will want to play ports that look very dated.

Steam-like distribution systems are the future, and if I can get a card that will beat a PS3 for $130, then I think that is really saying something about the possible future (or lack there of) of consoles.

It's not about what happens in the middle, it's about the ends.

Console games are getting pirated like mad too, but they also sell 20+ million copies, while Crysis was a run-away blockbuster at 1 million on the PC.

Only the final numbers matter. You want games that are huge, elaborate, detailed, well developed? Well, it takes a lot of investment and the consoles can pay for that.

(no, I don't currently own any consoles, but I have two gaming PC's)

People actually care if a game isn't PC exclusive? Wow, it's a video game. Why would it matter at all if they developers don't remain 'loyal' to you? The consoles are becoming a way for developers to make money, simple as that. Not all devs can make a system as great as Steam, and not all of them can stop piracy, etc. So they look to the consoles because then they can actually make a better living (remember, they do want to make money). I say buy a console and the games for it if you don't like it. Whining will do you no good.

It's not the principle of it, it's the repercussions. If they develop for multiplatform they develop for the lowest common denominator first, consoles. The PC version is essentially a console port. If you can't notice the difference between a console port and a proper PC game you must be blind.

A game designed to run on an Xbox at 60fps (Rage) won't utilize the resources in a new PC at all. All we can do is turn up the resolution (my monitor only goes to 1680x1050 so that's that gone) or turn up the AA. There's no DX10 specific sweetness, there's nothing that utilizes the extra horsepower.

What like Tom Clancies las vegas, or Lost planet where in either of those they have Xbox controls listed?

or how Las Vegas looks like crap, but has crazy requirements.

I'd like to remind everyone that console games are rendered in 720/768P. That's the same amount of pixels (give or take a few hundred thousand) of a 19" wide screen(1440x900). Find me a game that can't be maxed out on 1440x900 with an HD3850 or 9600GT.

True, I placed that number higher than I should have; I was talking 8800GT levels. So $100 for 9600GT?

Though I had the PS3 in mind, as I thought I heard it was near 8800GTX in what it could handle.
