Wood is non-conductive, so it would not short out any electronics. Shorting would only be an issue if the MB standoffs make contact between the ground contacts and adjacent components due to not being properly placed.

Yeah, that could work, but you would probably need to use taller-than-normal standoffs and raise the backplate a bit, in order to avoid having to cut slots for the bottoms of the PCI brackets. For example, here's a custom motherboard tray I fabricated out of aluminum diamond plate:

Diamond steel plates are at any hardware store for $20-50.

Standoffs are a $2-3 dollars for a few.

Those are mighty big stand offs though, arent they duckie. I would probably just get those standoffs and screw them into the wood to avoid the aluminum $$$.
