In terms of everything: physics, lighting, environment, overall graphics etc.

Mine would be the COD4 engine, followed by Unreal Engine 3.

cry engine for its graphics and the interativness of the enviroment(u could burn down entire forests in crysis 2, well atleast it is advertised like that)

cryengine2: it's the most realistic, which is more difficult to do in terms of programming, compared to coming up with your own variation of gravity and physics

AFAIK cod4 engine was developed from scratch.

i should have added iD4 engine (doom 3) and the fear engine...too late i guess

As engines go, from a technical point of view, the Cryengine 2 has to be the best, it's by far the most advanced engine I've come across (I haven't used the CoD4 engine) but for general accessibility and ease of development the Source engine will be king for a long time to come, in my opinion.

That's not taking the games based on said engines into account, though.

EDIT: Yay, first personal milestone, I'm at 100 posts now, go me!

Art design and engine capabilities are two COMPLETELY different things

Bioshock's characters looked like that for a reason.... Do Mass Effect's characters look cartoony? nope, do Gears of War's characters look cartoony? not a all...

Value's Source Engine

Obviously not because its the latest and greatest, but most of the games I play on a consistant basis are built on it. TF2, DoD:S, CS:S multiplayer.

I guess in the near future as more games are built on UT3 engine my favorite game engine might change.

the votes are quite amazing. i was thinking everyone would blindly vote for crysis.

I was actually expecting lots of Source votes because of the huge modding community and I'm sure a lot of modders visit these forums, too.

I'm going to have to say the Source engine. It may not be the most advanced when it comes to bleeding edge graphics, but the way it was designed is sheer brilliance. It was built from the ground up with modularity in mind. This makes it easy to add new components to the engine such as HDR, motion blur, lighting/shadow enhancements, and particles. And it helps keep development costs down because the engine isn't being redone.

When then next set of engines come out and someone makes another poll like this. Source will still be an option because it will have been updated to rival the new engines. That is why it is the best.
