E8500 temps

Thread Starter
I have just switched from an E6600 to an E8500 on my Striker Extreme motherboard (BIOS 1504), using my existing large water cooling system (dtek fuzion, laing vario d5, thermochill pa120.3, etc).

As soon as I put the CPU in, it is at 50 degrees C. I have tried redoing everything in case the chip wasn't flat or the thermal compound wasn't on well and so on, and cant get it any lower.

I even tried leaving it off overnight, going right into the BIOS "hardware monitor" and it was at 48'C still. The copper on the side of block is cold to the touch.

The ambient temperature here is not very high, every fan is on max and the side of the case is off (I have tried with it on too).

Setting the vcore to "AUTO" set it to 1.1v but this made no difference to the temps.

At stock with 1.2v set for the vcore in the BIOS my temperatures are:

Idle:
Motherboard: 50'C
Core 0: 49'C
Core 1: 44'C

Load:
Motherboard: 65'C
Core 0: 61'C
Core 1: 56'C

I'm about to pull the block off and put a temperature sensor between the chip and the block but before I try that, I'd like to know if there is some known problem detecting the temperature on this CPU. I have the latest coretemp and speedfan (4.35b24) but even there, the temperatures seem a bit strange. If there was a problem, I don't see how it would affect the motherboard, either.

With quite low voltages on a 45nm CPU and considering that it doesn't feel hot in the slightest, these temperatures just seem incredibly high to me.

Is the chip can overclock well, I would say not to worry. Use RealTemp and test the senors for being 'stuck'. Otherwise, you have a reason to swap chips out with intel

Thanks. I have now tested from 1.1 to 1.25v and clocked it to 425*8 so far with no problems (9.5 multi seemed to work fine for many hours of real use but prime95 gave me an error of 4.999999 or something) and no change to the heat. It's just a bit strange that I don't know if I am seeing the temperatures properly.

I think my sensors are screwed up in my 45nm too. They never, ever go below 35°C, which is ridiculous because my previous 65nm would idle at 29°C. I just go by my motherboard sensor which say high 20°'s idle and high 30°'s load.

With a watercooling setup like yours you have nothing to worry about with these 45nm chips.

With a 45 nm CPU you should be using Real temp instead. It does sound like your temp sensor is bad though.

45nm
Use RealTemp and calibrate it if you want more accurate idle temps.
calibration:
http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/docs.php
example (my calibration)
room temp 24c
tested calibration temp 28c
E8400 would show 3-4c over room temp if idle was accurate
I needed no calibration adjustment

mine does not go below 33c @3.8 so i think you're ok

Thanks for the info everyone. Do I need to actually measure the temperature manually in order to calibrate realtemp or is it fine on the default settings?
