First build. Please advise.

Thread Starter
Ok, so as you can see from my sig rig I have been using a dell. I have always used pre built systems. I have experience changing video cards, Ram, and CPUs, but have never built a complete computer from Components. I really want to make sure all of the components will work together so I want to ask you guys for some advice. Here is the list of components I am considering right now:
Mobo -DFI p35 T2R
CPU -E8500
PSU -Corsair 750TX
HD -SG Barracuda 7200 500 GB
OS -Vista home premium 64bit w/SP1
Video -ATI 4870

I still need help picking a:
Sound card
Case
Ram
Optical Drive

Budget is around 1300 (could stretch up to 1400)

Suggestions are welcome. Please keep in mind this is my first build so advice on actual computer building is welcome.

Thanks so much!
-Bob

I would go to FAQ's and each of the parts forums to get help. People would be happy to help you but this is not the correct place for help. Give me a couple minutes and I can get you a build.

I would opt for the Western Digital Caviar SE16 640gb hard drive instead of the seagate. Very good hard drive and fast with 2 320gb platters.

Corsiar PSU is a good choice.
Good mobo choice supposedly it overclocks like a champ.
don't know what videocard you are talking about but hopefully you are getting a 4850 or 4870

I would get a 4gb of memory since you are going with vista 64. Gskill, OCZ, Corsair or Crucial (although I can't remember if its corsair or crucial thats been having bad batches lately...) 1006 would be nice too.

I wouldn't spend money on a sound card, I would wait and see what the onboard audio performs like, you can easily upgrade that later and spend the money elsewhere. For a case get anything with good airflow and good looks that you like. Antec 900, CM690, CM590, antec 300, or whatever you are willing to spend on one.

This place is fine to post, many many many others have.

But perhaps in the future it should go under "Intel - General" instead of the build logs

I'm also working on a build ~$1300. This should help you get an idea.

Motherboard: Biostar Tpower I45
GPU: 4870x2
CPU: E8500
HD: WD 6400AAKS
Case: Antec 900
PSU: Zalman ZM750-HP(modular)
RAM: Mushkin Redline 2x2gb 1066

OS: Vista Ultimate (previously bought, so build would probably be ~$1700 if included)

You should think about getting a P45 board, I think they have the P45 version of that board(not sure). What kind of case do you want? Are you going to be moving it around a lot? If not, it may be easier to have a full tower.

For actual building, before you touch any parts make sure you touch a the metal part of your case so that you ground yourself. You don't want your stuff to get fried. Also, be careful while you're building, you don't want something messing it up(pets, siblings, etc).
