[THG] AMD Athlon 2000+ with 8w TDP

Quote:
With the development of the Atom processor, Intel introduced a totally new chip design that consumes very little energy. AMD had to strike back, and did so by clocking down its Athlon 64, employing the K8 micro architecture, down to the lowest possible frequency of 1 GHz. The Athlon 64 2000+ runs with a core voltage of 0.90 volts and uses just 8 watts . As a result, the CPU easily operates without a fan. If you drop the 8 W Athlon 64 into a motherboard based on the 780G chipset, then the system hits power consumption numbers that, in our measurements, are below Intel’s Atom desktop solution. We were even able to lower the core voltage by 11%, without stability problems, and the power analyzer read lower numbers. Interestingly, AMD’s Athlon 64 2000+ processor, unlike Intel‘s Atom CPU, is not embedded in the motherboard. It can be run on any board with an AM2 or AM2+ socket.

Compared to Intel’s Atom, which runs at 1.6 GHz, the Athlon 64 2000+ is clocked at 1 GHz—60% lower. Despite this, the Athlon 64 outperforms the Atom in several benchmark tests as a result of its more efficient K8 architecture. In addition, the energy consumption of the entire system is lower, and that’s what really matters most.

Wow, I'm impressed. Athlon 2000+/780G is an Atom/645G killer. Maybe Intel will decided to give the Atom a better chipset now.

AMD Really knows how to recycle it's architecture, I'm glad it's working out though.

But anyway, this is some pretty interesting news considering how well Atom has been sellling. If AMD is producing a higher performing chip platform with lower power consumption, this is only a good thing for them IMO.

AMD's CPU consume 8w while Atom consumes 4w.

However, the 780G+SB700 consumes around 15w while Atom's 945GC+ICH7 consumes 25w.

AMD's build beats the Atom with more features and lower power consumption while being competive in performance. Overclock it (is it possible) and it will match the Atom fine.

Putting a low power chip on a full sized mATX board meant for bigger processors is an interesting idea, but I don't see the use. The 2000+ fails at HD, so it doesn't make any sense putting it on a 780G, a multimedia powerhouse. You might aswell get a 4050e that's capable of handling HD if you're gonna buy a 780G.

AM2 mini itx boards are starting to pop out though, so it might be a viable AMD alternative to the Atom. Why they don't make it into an integrated package is beyond me though.

Sweet! I've been waiting for something like this for a torren box/file server. I wonder what the price will be. Does anyone even make a sub 100W PSU? I'd love to have a small energy efficient PSU to go with it.

I think it's a great idea to mix the two because that means that the consumer gets the ultimate choice for pairing parts together.

If later on, you get water or something, get a quad core in that HTPC, best thing about using Desktop Socket.

The 780G is relatively new chipset so the mITX boards aren't that common yet. I do believe there are at least 4 different manufactors of a 780G mITX.

Why would you want an intergrated package?

What AMD needs to do is designed stripped down verson of the awesome 780G and intergrate the southbridge. Drop some USB/SATA ports. Cut some of the HD3200 cores. Power saving could also be achieve by using single-phase PWM instead of 3/4/6-phase common on the 780G.

Of course.... they are AC-DC power bricks into DC-DC convertors.
