[Valleywag] Former PC World chief: Macs no more expensive than PCs

Quote:
"A MacBook is in the same ballpark as a roughly similar Dell or HP, and less than a Sony." That's the conclusion of Technologizer editor Harry McCracken, after running the numbers several different ways on competing notebooks. The MacBook didn't win most hardware categories, but it came out well-rounded, with superior warranty service and media software. McCracken, until recently the editor in chief of PC World, was infamous among local tech journalists for toting Apple laptops to work.
In short:

Quote:
“Actually, a MacBook is in the same ballpark as a roughly similar Dell or HP, and less than a Sony. If you’re tempted by a MacBook and can afford its pricetag, go ahead and buy one–it’s a decent deal.”

I would disagree there. A Macbook with similar specs to my laptop costs $2200 and mine only cost me $800. That doesn't look like a similar price IMO.

I like how the mac wins at stuff that doesn't really matter. I mean a power adapter?

Yet the CPU, GPU, etc all goes to Dell, HP, and Sony.

What is this round 3 or 4 of this debate?

We don't need some silly analysis showing us the numbers. PC notebooks from Dell, HP, and Lenovo are quite a bit cheaper than the Mac Book's. Furthermore, the PC notebooks offer more options in terms of features, performance, and quality. You can go dirt cheap if you thats what suits you or you can crank up the features.

Despite this, this thread is highly likely to turn into a OSX versus Vista argument and why OSX must be compared to Vista Ultimate because there is only one version of OSX and thus it must be compared to the highest version of Vista, despite their features not matching up.

For your analysis:

Compared to the 15.4" $1999 MBP:

A Lenovo Thinkpad T61 is 40% cheaper
A Lenovo Thinkpad T500 is 18% cheaper
A Dell Latitude E6500 is 11% cheaper
A Dell Precision M4400 is 7% cheaper

All compared laptops are of equal or higher built quality and come with business class warranties.

See attached image and Excel spreadsheet please.

The problem with comparing Mac's to PC is that you have to bring the PC's up to the Mac's specs regardless of wether you want them or not. PC notebooks allow you go with cheaper features if that suits you, making the PC notebook a big winner in anything under the top of the line.

I also considered only purchase price, not overall cost of ownership. (You might make a case that Macs are cheaper to own than PCs simply because you spend less time worrying about spyware, adware, and junkware.)
All this guy's credibility just went out the window.

a good power adapter is crucial, my laptop's broke, and the port connecting it is kaput, so quality in the power delivery system is commendable.

You can't really argue with that. And no, I didn't make the image.
