USB Ports Intermittently Failing - Bad MoBo?

My on-board USB ports are intermittently shutting off. Whatever peripheral is plugged in instantly powers off and becomes unresponsive at random times. Additionally, when I first booted up after moving, some USB drivers failed to install. I'm fairly confident that these drivers were Windows drivers.

The case USB ports are properly attached as is my expandable slot. It looks like a USB PCI card except it attaches by case jumpers rather than PCI. However, these are not functional at any time. I haven't reformatted and my motherboard drivers have been properly installed so I'm unsure as to why this issue has cropped up. Is this a defective motherboard, bad mobo drivers, or bad windows drivers. In the case of windows drivers, how to I go about reinstalling them?

Judging by the large HDD's and GPU you're using, I would actually blame the PSU first. It's possible that it doesn't have enough output and the USB ports are the first to suffer. Take out an unnecessary drive and see if the problem still happens.

I switched out my GX260 for my 8800gts (never had problems with this card) that takes considerably less power. I have my mouse, keyboard, and usb mic plugged in atm, but it seems like if more than 2 devices are plugged in, they will work for a while and then one of them will shut off. When unplugging the device that is turned off, Windows still plays the device removal aound even though the device was getting no power. If I move that device to another USB port, it will work for a while until the problem reoccurs.

Even with the mic unplugged, the keyboard is going out. Of all the devices plugged in, it seems like one goes out while the other(s) stay on.

Sounds like the USB ports are powering down. Open the device manager and make sure all the USB ports have this option unselected.

That was the problem I had when USB stuff would randomly stop working.

You could try a repair install of Vista, that may fix it.

Oddly enough, when plugged/unplugged into either my onboard USB or the frontside case USB, I hear the insert/remove device sound played in Windows, but the keyboard doesn't light up or work.

The mouse will remain on always, but both the keyboard and mic will cut off intermittently regardless of which port they are plugged into. I'm considering a format, but I'm sure as to whether or not that would do anything.

If that doesn't work, ASUS is very good with RMA's. They might even do a cross-shipping deal with you if you let them know how much trouble you've been having/how likely you are to switch to Gigabyte.

USB Ports Intermittently Failing - Bad MoBo?

Picked these up for my TRON Legacy theme build. Got the optional light bar upgrade kit(s). Note, for a quad channel package you will need two light bar kits as each covers two sticks. No issues...
