Convert Matte screen to Glossy? Is it possible?

Thread Starter
You'll have to excuse my uber noobness here guys, but I have been searching for awhile now, and can't seem to find any answers to my direct question. I have a samsung 24" widescreen monitor and it has a matte finish to the screen. My desktop PC is in the basement, so there are no windows and no direct light hitting the screen at any time.

I recently walked through Best Buy, and saw a great looking LCD monitor with a glossy screen finish to it, and I noticed how vivid the colors and pictures looked. Is there any particular reason why LCD manufacturers make the screens in a matte finish instead of glossy? I supposed the most common reason would be direct lighting hitting the screen and causing glare.

Glare isn't an issue for me at this point, but am using a matte finish screen. What are the cons of using glossy screens vs the normal matte finish?

And now for the final question, and of course the topic of this thread....

Is there a conversion out there someplace to go from matte to glossy? I don't think its as simple as placing a sheet of glass in front of the screen so I was wondering how difficult it would be to do, even if it were possible.

I hope some of you guys out there are smarter than I am when it comes to this stuff, and can help me out a bit. Thanks

Glossy will slightly improve contrast, but is much more prone to glare, as you suspected. Glossy screens are also more vulnerable to smudges.

I'm not exactly sure how the outer layer of the screen is bonded to the LCD, but from looking at them, you would probably destroy the panel trying to remove it. Also, putting a new outer screen on would be a major pain.

Yeah, you pretty much can't change the screen finish without horribly damaging your monitor...

Sorry for necrobump, but I was wondering the same thing here. It would be cool if we could replace the matte with a glossy screen.

here the guy successfully has his notebooks screen replaced with a glossy display. I don't know if desktop monitors are different, harder to change the screen or not but that guy there had it done and everything stayed the same with the notebook lol

In this instructables the guy pulls apart an LCD monitor to make NFSW nore SFW.... his second?? step is to remove the antiglare/matte layer and then remove the polarization filter, i believe you simply want to remove the matte layer.
