Gameing/Workstation PC: Fx 1700 Vs Gtx 280

Thread Starter
My friend wants a video card he can run really intensive auto cad applications on, and be able to game on. He has a buget of around $400 for his video card. I was able to narrow it down to two cards:

Which is better a FX 1700 or a GTX 280?

I am not sure if the GTX 280 will run Algor Fempro, Solid works, Auto CAD, and Inventor at the level of work he wants to do.

I am not sure if the FX 1700 will run able Bio-Shock, Warhammer Online, Star Craft II type stuff as well.

He is looking to put this into a new PC with a 3.0 GHz core 2 Quad, 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive.

please please please help me!

GTX280. Its the most powerful single GPU available. Its great. Compatible with everything because its not SLi and has much more use then the FX1700!

FX 1700 is sweeet for work. Gotta weight whats more important. Work, grab the 1700. If you just can't resist the games, get the 280.

I have a Quadro FX 1700.
Runs Bioshock on full res full graphics no chop.
Runs Crysis/Crysis Warhead/Crysis Wars on full res medium graphics no anti aliasing, no chop.

It also runs Age of Conan, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and any other game I throw at it.
That being said, dollar for dollar, you''d get more from gaming cards, but this is not a gaming computer. I use it primarily for 3D CAD, but hey, if it runs games well why not play?
