So you got like 3 hardcore competing companies all on the same card.. isnt that hilarious?
Yea, I was just thinking about that actually haha. Franken-GPU... maybe I'll start some corporate drama.
Well, the card is installed and the system is running. I had to buzz a bit of plastic off of one of the corners of the the AMD fan so it would clear the PCI slot. The 80mm fan isn't very loud which is nice. Here's a couple shots of the monster up and running...
No 120mm fan:
To level the playing field for the first temperature tests, I unplugged the 120mm fan that I added to ensure that the test is as empirical as possible. This reduces the amount of variables in the test to one: the HS installed on the card.
: 35 degrees. This is a 10 degree-improvement.
after 15 minutes with no 120mm: 42 degrees (18 degree improvement)
Average improvement (no 120): 14 degrees
With 120mm fan:
Adding the 120mm fan under the GPU would probably have improved the temps recorded with the stock HS assembly as well, so it's not quite fair to compare results with the 120mm fan to those without it.
temperature is looking great: 32 degrees! That's an improvement of 13 degrees over the stock cooler.
temp improves by 2 degrees with the 120mm fan: 40 degrees. That is a full 33% improvement over the stock heatsink.
Average improvement (with 120): 16.5 degrees
The averages don't really matter IMO but I listed 'em anyway. Load temps mean more as cooling is more important when the card is running at full steam.
I will keep the 120mm fan as I don't need it anywhere else at the moment.
So all in all, I cut my load temp down by one third and my idle temp down by just under 30%. All it took was some bitz that I had lying around and a couple hours of my time... I'd say the project was a success! and a lot of fun.
Plus no one else has a tri-corporation GPU
Thanks for showin' interest. I hope at least a couple people who read this are inspired to go mod something! If anyone has any question feel free to ask.
