Must settle on build by Monday

Thread Starter
Hey there.

One day (yesterday) I'm chugging along on a buggy pc and the next I'm scrambling to put a build together before Labor Day. I've only got a few days, but I haven't looked at PC components since my last build 2 years ago, and I never wanted to OC until now, so I'm all noobified again.

After some quick research, I started getting pulled into OC'ing and I got information overload. Luckily I just found you guys.

I'm looking for a nice platform to learn on, on air to start, with room to go crazy as I learn. Here's where my shopping is for now:

Edit: Original target for core components = $1000.
Edit: Speaking of price; what's your experience with Labor Day Sales? I've got several rebates ending on the 31st.

Pounce on Rebate? Wait for Sale?

CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
MB Asus Rampage Formula
GPU 2 x Radeon HD4850 Crossfired
RAM 2 x 2GB OCZ Plat Enh BW DDR3 12800
HD 2 x 70GB WD Raptors RAID 0 (salvaged, addl storage HD's as needed)
PS Calculators say 550W. Advice?
Cooler XIGMATEK HDT-S1283
Sound SB Audigy 2 ZX (salvaged)
Optical Sony Optiarc DVD RW

OCZ says the RAM is matched to the new Asus boards, but I don't know if the Enhanced Bandwidth is price efficient.

Taking all advice! I need to decide before Monday. Thanks all!

Off to read more FAQ's.

Min a quality 750w for that setup. Remember that even the best PS's are only 80+ efficient so you dont want to max them out.

many options here but no need to start an x vs y war here. Just get best bang for buck at sale time.

Its a bit different than yours but I think its a really good build.

I went with the E7200 because they clock to about 3.5 and are cheap. DDR2 ram is cheaper so I went with that. The psu is rated at 610w constant at only 40c so that's a no brainer in my book. The Visiontek gpu also has the awesome lifetime warranty

I personally would say min 600-650 watts for that system especially if your looking to OC you want some extra headroom in that PSU

How about the CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W?

Is the single rail a big issue?

Anyone have input on the OCZ being matched to the Asus boards?

I would not worry about how many rails the psu has just how many amps per rail. I recommended that psu due the fact that it is a great psu and can run your system. The corsair you have is a great psu also so the choice is yours.

I would not worry about the ram. I would still go with OCZ they have good tech support from what i hear
