DDR2 or DDR3

Thread Starter
On my board, I have support for both DDR 2 and 3. I currently use 4GB DDR of OCZ Reaper (PC6400). I know it's not the fastest RAM, and am thinking of switching to a new set. When I bought the board, DDR3 was just stupidly priced, and I decided that it wasn't worth it, but now the price seems a little more reasonable, I'm thinking about it. Has the DDR3 technology become more reliable and worthy? Simply put, what performs better at this stage, DDR2 or 3?

Thanks

Unless you're pushing the max overclock, you don't need it. It's still too expensive.

Besides, if you were to install it along with your current 4GB, it would de-clock itself to PC6400.

If youre going to shell out for 1333 ddr3 and run 1:1 you will notice an increase
of about 10% accross the boards from 800 ddr2

DDR3 will give you a slight increase in performance/bandwidth. Price/performance ratio still goes to DDR2 though, hands down.

If your going to have under 1600mhz ddr3 its not worth it, but if you want 1600mhz or higher go for it! But as mentioned before the ddr2 is very cheap and quite good!

Hey guys.

How does the DDR2 v DDR3 decision go for a brand new build, though? I'm new to OC, and I only have today and tomorrow to decide or lose out on my rebates.

I only started studying OC a few days ago, and I haven't shopped parts in over two years, so I'm getting analysis paralysis and my brain's melting.

I guess I'm stuck on this decision: Is the price/value but eventual obsolescence of DDR2 going to be more satisfying than the performance and future upgrades of a DDR3 build?

I hate the thought potentially making the mistake of going DDR2 at the end of DDR2 usefulness. But if OC'ing doesn't make that much of a difference, then there's no sense wasting money on DDR3. Or is there? :swearing:

do you really expect his motherboard to do 666mhz front side bus? and why would he need a 1:1 anyway?

In addition to my questions above, I'm so burned out reading this morning that I forgot to ask about this quote I took from the OCUK board:

He says:
Quote:
Now i have a Asus Rampage Formula (DDR2, X48). Do you have the DDR3 version?
I went back to DDR2 because after doing research hardly anyone can get DDR3 memory running at very high speeds. For instance the highest i could get stable was 1650MHz, on memory thats rated at 2000MHz. But like i said i'm sure the mobo or RAM wasnt working properly. But even the OCZ guys on the OCZ Forums couldnt even get this memory runnings at 2GHz! LOL.

So sod that, back to DDR2.
I haven't yet read the forum for OC results as I'm still trying to assemble a basic build idea. Is that what you're finding? Is Crucial the better alternative to OCZ?

Ugh, every question opens up another one.
