First Timer! (oh joy... lol)

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, Im looking to build a new computer but having some issues as to where to start. My current computers graphics card just went out and i decided (after lugging around that huge piece around with me everywhere..refer to my pc specs below lol) that i need to build my own - quieter - smaller - sexier computer.

I would like to think tht i can salvage some of the components from my juggernaught like sound card (creative audigy), hard drive (which was just recently purchased because my old one crashed.. i think its a western digital 160 gig hd), and ram (2 gigs of something... came with the pc)

Basically im just looking for some guidance as to what to buy for a quality gaming rig that is under $800 bucks assuming that i can salvage what i have

Any input is greatly appreciated - Thanks!

How big is your monitor?(and the resolution most importantly). That will decide a lot of the parts you buy.

Anything around 1680 x 1050 (or is it 1650 x 1080?). Go with these parts (someone correct me if they see anything that should be corrected).

CPU: E7200
Graphics Card: ATi 4850
RAM: 2GB pc-6400 (quite cheap nowadays)
MoBo: Gigabyte EP45 DS3R
Power Supply: Corsair 750w (Could probably go with a 600w if you need to cut money)
Case: CoolerMaster 690 (awesome case)

I think that should leave you around 800 bucks.

Get the G.Skill 4gb PC2(8000) ram sticks (2x2gb) from newegg instead and cut down the psu to 650 or 700W.
Get my mobo (sig rig). Don't forget the HSF. I'd say go Tuniq Tower 120 but there's always the TRUE.
Make sure you get thermal paste as well.
If you don't plan on OC'ing too much, get an Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 thing instead of Tuniq for HSF, it's a bit cheaper.
If you're under a budget, I'd get an 8800gt/gts instead of the 4850 (Mind you I don't know the prices of those video cards. I'd get the cheaper one, lol).

I forgot about the HSF! My bad. The Sunbeam Core Contact is suppost to be really good and it is only around 40 bucks! I still say go with the mobo I recommended, because you can always crossfire later on. It is more futureproof. The 4GB of ram looks like a good idea though.
