Be warned if your hard drive is about to die! - Page 4

I guess Fedora sets it up on its own, because it notified me of a drive in my RAID5 with 150 bad sectors. Definitely useful. The WD was within warranty and RAMd it for a new drive within the same week (3 platter WD green failed, and got a nice 2 platter one back to match the other 2 drives in the array).

Rep for helping other distros, and the guide itself.

I always check smart status randomly, generally every couple months as I've got a problem drive. So far the drive has gone back to normal and things seem to be ok, but you can never be sure. =) There were apparently a bunch of bad reviews and the model was known to die soon but this one seems going strong. =)

The new version of Disk Utility is even nicer than the previous one so I made new screenshots. Enjoy!

Updated again (for Windows users). None of the previously recommended programs had any obvious way to initiate SMART self-tests; those recommendations have been replaced with GSmartControl, which does.

Sorry if this is thread necromancing, but I really have to know.

How the hell do you start/stop a disk 718,447 times and still have it run only 2k++ nearing 3k hours!?

It was a laptop drive, with fairly aggressive power management. That's how.

@OP: Ahh, I see... But doesn't it wear out the motors and such if you keep starting and stopping it so often? :X

@mushroomboy: I have a rig in my living room that runs off a wonky 160GB WD1600BEVS.
It's a laptop drive, the Power on hours count doesn't track properly, and it says there are 143 bad sectors on the hard drive. (Y)
Tanked for years though, and is still fine.
