I just got my AMD Phenom 9950 BE, Asus M3A79-t Deluxe, and my Zalman 9700 Heatsink/Fan. I applied the thermal paste that came with the Zalman and there is a strange burning smell coming from my computer now....Is it the thermal paste or what? Maybe I used too much? It kinda smells like burning rubber...Any ideas?

Hmmm, hard to say what it might be. What kind of thermal paste did you use? Can you see any that may have been squeezed out from under the hsf?

Burning smell is never good man, Im not sure i have ever seen TIM Burn , so Im thinking its something else . Try to isolate it, see if its strong from the psu or mainboard maybe , Stick your sniffer in there see if you can figure out from which area maybe. Maybe try to touch some stuff and see if its uber hott. Thats all, i got for now Man , good luck
I dont know much about amd , but if the proc is anything like what i did in the past which was go from a p4 s478 2.6ghz chip to a 3.2 extreme, man that baby made my PSU squeal in pain. from the difference in power consumtion.

Burning smells normally mean fried hardware - unless of course your hardware is working. Is all your hardware functioning properly?
The CPU socket wouldn't get hot enough (before the PC shutoff) to start burning anything let alone thermal paste.
It could be a wiring short (fan/LEDs/other wires).
A short on small gauge wire (like fan and power wires) can and will melt wire coating pretty quickly. Look at all your wiring for melted coating.
Back when I was a noob I ordered replacement LEDs for my case and connected them directly to a molex connector - not knowing that most LEDs require an inline resistor to drop the voltage going to the LED. Eventually they all burned out one by one and I was left with a partially melted and charred connector that would get hot enough to almost cause a 1st degree burn.

open up the case and try to find the source of the smell.. maybe try blowing a little air inside the case to "clear" the smell a little for easier detection of the source of the smell
