Thread Starter
My mother has been using a Pentium 3 laptop for work since forever.
She had left it on over the weekend, covering the vent and it crashed
Woooooops.

I plan on building her a decent rig for cheap. I came up with two build options, let me know what you think!
She uses it for everyday stuff such as word documents, outlook, internet browsing, pictures...etc nothing to crazy.

Option 1:

MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail

HD: Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

DVD: LG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner w/ SecurDisc Tech Black SATA Model GH20NS15 - OEM

CASE: Rosewill R220-P-BK Black 0.5mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

PSU: Antec earthwatts EA500 500W ATX12V v2.0 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail

GPU: EVGA 384-P3-N966-TR GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

SUBTOTAL: $560.91 $463.91 with cheaper psu/case/ram ( thanks gandalf)

OR OPTION 2:

Option 2:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E7200 - Retail

MOBO: DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Well option 2 is obviously the superior build..and for only $100 more for a much better psu and a very good overclocking cpu which should hit 4.0ghz. SO yea id go for option 2.

Edit: dam im blind..didnt even see who its for and what its going to be used for...in that case option 1 is better and is still overkill...but itll be nice for her.

I like #1 but I would get this sweet deal for your PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371007

And I would stick with 2x1GB G.SKILL kit.

Oh also, do you plan to o/c her PC? If not no need for the aftermarket HS...And if she doesn't need her PC to look cool, there are some cheapo Rosewill cases, like this:

Thanks for the input so far guys.

I was planning on doing a light/mild OC, hence the Arctic cooler but only if temps allow.

Thanks for the links gandalf, I put the PSU/case in the more budget build and it lowered price A LOT without hindering performance.

So I guess my best bet would be option 1 for $490.91 + tax/ship

Looks pretty solid to me now, anything else let me know!

EDIT: also lowered ram from 2x2 to 2x1 for cheaper build. Saves almost $100 off original build. NICE!
