Q9650 vs QX9650

Thread Starter
OK. so I've sold my QX6850 finally.. I got a solid $425 out of it. So I'm happy about that.

So, Here's my next question everyone. I was planning on getting the Q9650 with E0 stepping. and overclocking the crap out of it. I only have Air cooling. but I have a decently cool system. and a good cooler in the Tuniq Tower.

So the Q9650 E0 stepping I can get for $529.00 from Fry's.
but right now on craigs list locally where I live, someone has listed a New QX9650 for $500.. and I could probably even get him to go lower than that on the baby. I'll offer him $475 cash maybe.

So my question is what one should I get. the QX9650, or the Q9650. I know the QX is the Extreme version with an unlocked Multi.. but the QX also only has C1 stepping. and the Q9650 has E0 and it's supposed to be better. I know I risk hitting a FSB wall with the Q9650. but I also could run into heat issues sooner with the QX9650.

So yea, what one should I get. whats better. and if anyone has a QX9650 here, what type of temps do you get. I'm wondering how cool it will run.

Thanks!

i have a qx9650 right now in my rig. i get at 4.4ghz load of about 58 (i am under water though). I would get the q9650. the E0 stepping from what i hear is great. last night i sold my qx for 675.00, which was pretty nice.

Be safe and get the Q9650, I dont think your MB is the best for OC with the Extreme since it has an unlocked multi. I guess if you were to Upgrade later it would be good to get the Xtreme now..but you can't really go wrong with either.

If the motherboard you are going to use can run 425-450+ FSB stable, go the Q9650 and save yourself some money and some heat dissipation. If you can't, go the QX9650.

I'm running 460FSB x 9 on a P45 motherboard, stable under 10 hours of prime. So I opted for the Q9650. Idling each core at around 34C and loading of 52C on air. Can't complain.

Mman you sold your QX9650.. why??

and Bizzare, you have that the wrong way around.. the unlocked would be better for me, in case I hit a FSB limit.. and I probably will somewhere.. I'm not sure what my eVGA 750i can do.. Should I try something like staying at something simple like 3.4 GHz yet slowly lower the multi til i find my FSB limit.. or whats a good way to find my limit?

and reigns of power. I'm not sure what my fsb limit is, what do you suggest is best way to find it on my Q6700..
also you must have not read entire post.. the QX9650 is actually CHEAPER than the Q9650.. the Extreme version is the cheaper one for me.. but then again the QX uses 130w vs the Q9650 using 95w.. and the Q9650 also has E0.. and it's supposed to run cooler, and better. I've seen many many people using them past 4.1 GHz on air..

I think the QX might actually run a little hotter. but it might be easier to clock with.. so I don't know.

Hey, first thing first, both the qx and q can achieve over 4.0 on air, with marginal vcores. Robilar has had his qx past 4.0 on a true for some time. The qx WILL run much hotter. The tests that i have seen give the qx a relatively higher temp at load than the q9650. I would take that into consideration. Your board should hit around 470-480 FSb (on a quad) before hitting a wall. That is what i have seen at least. The q9650 has a locked multi of 9, so at a 450 fsb, you will be breaking 4.0 ghz. I think you can probably push it a little higher than that.

I sold mine because i was ready for something new. Do not get me wrong, the qx chips are phenomenal. I personally would go with the standard q for the new stepping, lower wattage and lower temps.

oh ok.. well thanks for the first hand information.. thank you. That helps. and ya I'm thinkin I'll probably do something in the 450-470 FSB limit.. I've seen a few reviews online about my board.. and they all said they reaches 475 FSB on a Q6600.. one reviewer even hit 515 with his eVGA 750i.. I'm not saying I'll hit that.. but I'm hoping for something decent.

Again, does anyone have a suggestion for the best, and safest way to check a FSB limit.. should I just keep a same speed and lower the multi on my Q6700.?

Thanks Mman, I'll probably get the regular Q for the E0, and the lower heat output.

With you MB i would get the Extreme no question. If you had lets say a P45, X38 ,X48 then Q9650.

lol, are you basing your answer on the fact that why go the normal if it's an extreme..

thats not all you need to take into account dude..

I'm actually thinkin maybe the normal Q9650... becuase it takes 35watts less than the QX... 130 vs 95.. the Q9650 will run cooler because of that.. plus has intels new E0 stepping. that's supposed to run cooler, produce less heat. and overclock better than C1.. so there's more to it than just get the extreme because it's the extreme... I'm not looking to get the name so I can join the Extreme Owners club.. I want whats best.

but thanks for the input.

and Zealot I see your point.. I'm wondering what type of FSB limit I'll hit.. maybe I should figure it out before I decide what to get huh.. i see why you say that.. but maybe I'll hit a heat limit faster with the QX then I'll hit a FSB limit with the regular.. see my point!
