UV Sterilization

First off, I know its cheaper to just use a biocide additive to your coolant such as PT_Nuke, but wouldn't it be more fun to use ultraviolet light at 253.7nm to kill basically everything organic in your cooling system?

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be near that stuff.

"In human beings, skin exposure to germicidal wavelengths of UV light can produce sunburn and (in some cases) skin cancer. Exposure of the eyes to this UV radiation can produce extremely painful inflammation of the cornea and temporary or permanent vision impairment, up to and including blindness in some cases. UV can damage the retina of the eye."

Not worth the risks in my opinion.

fun sure

wise? not unless you have access to UVA/UVB blocking plastic/glass and can build an enclosure to prevent any light escaping. blocking direct line-of-sight isn't sufficient either, refraction of UV rays can be just as damaging.

i was thinking something like a glass tube in a U shape, enclosed in a metal enclosure. Glass tube because the UV light would degrade any plastic very quickly.

The effectiveness of these lamps are also short lived, plus your using more power, where as biocide keeps working without power draw.

Regular glass stops 99% of UVA and 70% of UVB (or is it the other way around?). It won't hurt you to try this. You can pick up a UV toothbrush sanitizer for cheap in many drug stores (or Wal-Mart) that you could probably modify.

Won't UV damage other components over time? I know it's not good for rubber
