First main overclock help - E8400

Thread Starter
Hello guys.

I just got my new E8400 with the idea of overclocking it to 3.6 and beyond. I've heard that many can get it up to 4 and about 3.6 is the minimum but I don't want to just plonk in numbers that others have gotten and see it all **** up on me.

I did a bit of overclocking on my previous 6400 but never too much because I didn't get stable results. I now have a new mobo and case which has an extra fan in it (which isn't spinning right now though...not sure why?)

You can treat me like a total newbie though so I'd really like just some general tips and steps to take etc. Some rough numbers of speed and volts would be well appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I currently have it at a mere 3.42Ghz because when I went to 3.6Ghz the computer just kept on restarting before even reaching the Vista logo. What sort of VCores should I be looking at for about 3.6 for starters? I started with 1.2v which I read was the stock and worked up 1 increment at a time about 4 times, all without success, before reverting back to a seemingly stable 3.42

On a side note, when I now look at system information I see that it's 3420 Mhz like it should be but before I overclocked it, it said it was at like 2333Mhz instead of the stock 3000Mhz. I found this a bit weird but the performance increase was massive since the overclock, even up to 3.42. Maybe it was running at 2.33 initially for some strange reason? The performance jump seems too big for just 3 to 3.42 but there is definitely something strange about that initial 2333 Mhz reading.

EDIT:

Managed to get Windows to boot properly with 3.6GHz with VCore at 2.81 but it failed Orthos after about 20 seconds, shortly followed by a BSOD.

I then upped the VCore to 2.89 and it failed Orthos after about 30 seconds.

All I've changed are the FSB frequency, the VCore and set the PCIe thing at 100 like I read somewhere to do. Everything else, like memory frequencies and voltages etc is set to automatic.

I'm going to bed now but any help that I could read in the morning would be greatly appreciated.

Not happy with my initial overclocking

Any VCore under about 2.6v simply won't load windows when at 3.6Ghz. I've taken the VCore all the way up to about 3.16 with many increments and keep on failing Orthos with some other random BSODs and restarts to go with it. Is there some magical increment that I just missed or should I be looking at changing the settings of other things too?

WTH! I hope those are typos, because max volts for E8400 is 1.3625. 2.6 would FRY that chip. Do not go over 1.3625 for 24/7 use unless you want to buy another CPU in a few months! I have mine at around 4Ghz with 1.3625 vcore. I had to do a vdroop mod though. The newer chips should have E0 stepping and should OC better. If you still can not get stable, try upping the NB volts. You could also up the volts on your RAM a little to make sure it is not your RAM that is making you fail orthos. Someone else with your MoBo may be able to help you better with the exact settings. What are the temps you are getting, and what CPU cooler are you using?

What are all your settings in the bios and what are the specs on your memory? Whats your VID also? I run stable 3.6 at 1.225v.

Yes sorry. A typo I'm pretty sure. Instead of 3 I was really talking about more like 1.3. I was just following what other people with similar hard ware had done and now it seems to be ****ed and won't boot properly. Turns on then shuts down then restarts and stays running but without the monitors coming on. Fan-****ing-tastic.

EDIT: After reading the manual, I know they were typos and I never reached anything crazily high like 3 because the cpu VCore voltage can only range from 0.8 to 1.6 according to the motherboard manual.

Still ****ed though. It got ****ed last night and I've let it cool down overnight and nothing. I'm really not sure what mode it is in now when it gets turned on. Fan seems reasonably loud.

intel says up to 1.367 voltage is perfectly good
and anything past 1.45 is going to kill your hardware.
im assuming you haev a c0 like me?
(bleh, not greatest overclockers, e0 were better.)
im still workin on gettin my 4.0ghz stable, i probably just need to pencil in some vdroop stability roflmao

I don't know whether it's a c0 or e0. Where would I find that out? Either way, the voltages and frequencies I were using were well within the limits and now the whole computer won't even turn on. Is there any way to fix that without taking it to a technician?

It should say the sSpec on the box (eg: SLAPL). Type that into the Intel spec finder.

http://processorfinder.intel.com/

Or go into CPU-Z and it'll tell you under "Revision".

...I can't boot the computer remember? I'm on a laptop here.

Is there any way to fix this? I couldn't care less about overclocking it right now given that it's all ****ed.
