9800GTX vs. 4850

post #1 of 34
Thread Starter
Hi guys. I can get both the 9800GTX and the 4850 for about $150. Taking overclocking into consideration what card is better?

How about the 9800GT for about $110 vs the 4850 for $150.

I have seen people overclock a single 4850 to get 15-16k in 3dmark06. What will an overclocked 9800GT/X do?

Also, I do plan to run dual monitors. Thanks!
post #2 of 34
4850 is on par with the 9800GTX in terms of performance at stock frequencies. If both overclocked the same percentage, then theoretically it would perform almost nearly the same. A 9800GT, if I remember correctly, is just a rebadged 8800GT and will be about 15-20% slower than the 4850.

The HD4850 is slightly better than the 9800GTX and is about on par with the 9800GTX+

The 9800GT is a complete waste of money... There was talk about the 9800GT being a 55nm of the 65nm 8800GT, but right now they're re-etching 8800GT into 9800GTs (so you could be paying $20 more for a renamed 8800GT)

Put simply:
HD4850 = 9800GTX+
HD4850 > 9800GTX by 5-10%
HD4850 > 9800GT by 20-25%

I don't have a motherboard yet. But, I definitly will not get a crossfire or SLI board. All I ever want is a single card in my case.

What brand of 4850 is the best?

What do you think of this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102770 ?

That Sapphire isn't the reference design but from what I heard is actually a lower quality design than that of the reference. IMO you should pick an Asus (rebates are pretty fast) with a 3 year warranty or a Visiontek with lifetime warranty.

Don't compare performance of the two from 3DMark06 scores. Being more on the nVidia side of the house, I still recommend the 4850 more even though performance differences are neglible. The ATI card won't OC as much as the rear exhausting 9800GTX/+ but regardless performance is similiar between both. The 4850 usually goes for a tad cheaper and consumes less power which is why I recommend this card. Just make sure you have decent airflow in your case
