Blurred text when using a 1080p hdtv as a monitor...normal?

Thread Starter
I just purchased a samsung LN37A550 37" hdtv. It supports 1080p, native resolution 1920x1080. I thought that since my video card would be sending the same 1920x1080, that the text would be fine..but its not. PC gaming is good, no problems there. But whenever trying to view text, browse the web, or do anything like that, most of the text is blurred. Is there any way to get around this, or is this why a 37" hdtv is $999 and a 30" monitor is far more?

edit: another question to this, instead of going with this 37" hdtv, would I possibly be better off going with something like 2 samsung T260HD's(or 1 T260 and 1 T260HD)? They'd come out to about the same price as the 37"

Monitors text will look way better than HDTV's.. Text is always kind of fuzzy with an LCD/Plasma/DLP Television when hooked up to a computer.

Movies/Games on the other hand will look nice.

I dont agree at all, Im sitting in front of a 50" plasma and a 24" monitor... The 50 is better for everything, text is not fuzzy at all.

I've found the truth to this answer lies with native resolution. If the native resolution is low, that means somewhere there is scaling going on (software, hardware [TV, Vid Card, etc])
My TV has a low native resolution so pixel wide text looks terrible while movies (played from my PC) and games look great. I worked around it by raising my DPI settings ( display properties > settings > advanced ) but if I were you I wouldn't mess with this, as it makes some programs and websites not appear correctly. It made things larger and some GUIs do not adjust well to different DPI settings.

Specs on that LN37A550 37" Sammy say it is 1080p native, I would expect text to look much clearer than it does on my TV, but I can't compare without seeing it.

Did you try turning on Cleartype? I don't think that's the issue, but it can't hurt to try.

Thanks for the suggestions on this guys, I played around with the settings and actually found a configuration guide on avsforums.com, but it still doesn't really help the text. Even with sharpness at 0 it still looks like crap. I think i'm going to end up putting a 22" monitor next to the tv for doing text based stuff, and just leave the tv there for gaming and movies..guess that'd work, be a pain in the ass alot of times, but it should work.

I'm running a sony 40" HDTV, and had some issues with text clarity when i was running the HD3870.
But now with the 4870 the blurry text is gone!
Native resolution on the sony is 1920x1080, but i run 1360x768 day to day.... no problems at all!
Use a dual link DVI, with HDMI adaptor. HDTV's wont do 1920x1080 via the regular VGA.

Like Stianby, I'm also using a dvi-hdmi adapter. I didn't really think of lowering the resolution, I thought running at the TV's native would be best. I'll give that a shot and see if it is any better
