He won't be able to make it to Rivet City without ammo, unless he stocks up on stimpaks and uses a nice melee weapon to get through the Super Mutants.

When it comes to ammo, search EVERYTHING. Every box, filing cabinet, desk, mailbox, EVERYTHING. And when you can, get the Scavenger perk; that perk makes it so you find waaay more ammo on bodies/in containers.

The lack of ammo in this game is what makes this game (imo) more exciting. Unlike most shooters, you have a choice: waste what little ammo you have on that raider, run up to him and beat his ass with a sledgehammer and conserve ammo, or run and save yourself the trouble.

I think the people who are used to the typical FPS are going to have trouble with ammo in this game .

Same here. I've got a couple thousand rounds each of 5.56mm, ammo for the Burnmaster and the Vengeance. On top of that I've got ~800 darts and a couple hundred rounds each for Lincoln's Repeater and the Terrible, not to mention mini-nukes, missiles, bottlecap bombs and nuka-grenades out the wazoo. I've sunk 48 hours into one character and still am only halfway through the main quest.

Quest Spoiler: (Sorry for rant)
The source of the fire ants is a strange scientist in the subway who has genetically modified the ants, however he has accidentally modified them to shoot fire.. nice. The quest is ended by going into the subway, talking to the scientist, then either tending to his computers in the ant cave, or killing the Queen ant. (I chose to kill ) He will then give you a choice of a quest perk, one will boost your Strength stat by 1 and increase your resistance to fire, the other will boost your Perception stat by 1 and increase your resistance to fire. (IMO their should be an optional perk for each stat) I would recommend you wait a little to finish this quest if you're struggling for ammo as this is quite an intense encounter for a level 4, especially if you specialise in guns, and are out of ammo. If you have a melee counterpart and 8+ stimpaks, you may get away with it.

Rivet City is pretty much the bottom right corner of the map, almost parallel to the water treatment facility. Great place for ammo, however you'll need some to get their, unless again, you have a sufficient melee counterpart, as you will come into quite a number of Mirelurks, Centaurs and Super Mutants along the way.

I had ammo scarcity problems in the beginning, but now I have tons upon tons of ammunition, 300+ rounds of 5.56, 300+ rounds of 10mm, 800+ rounds of 5mm.

I tell you the scournger perk, makes it so I just will not run out of ammo.

I finally stopped using the Hunting rifle, and moved on to the .308 sniper rifle. Its my favorite weapon out of VATS.

Bah, seems like fallout 3 does not like saving all of my screen shots, so here is just one of them.

I never had a problem with ammo. I use it as currency now at the shops.

I gotta say though, I'm really disappointed with the level cap. 20 levels, that's it??? Was there even a cap in Oblivion?

Well, this isn't Oblivion, it's Fallout!

I don't mind the level cap at all. I really enjoyed exploring in Fallout 2 which I carried over to FO3. I've been playing for ~12hrs so far and I haven't even gotten the info from the bar guy in Megaton on what happened to my father. I've been doing side quests and wandering around. Having been playing City of Heroes/Villains for the last two years, it's nice to play a game again that has a story and isn't about level, level, level now!

With that said, I'm enjoying this game a lot. I haven't played a FPS since Doom 2! So I was a bit worried when I found out that FO3 was going to have a FPS feel to it. I'm loving it greatly though. VATS is a blast to play with. I just found out today that if I repair my gear, it works better, go figure! I always find out stuff like that late, kind of a trend I've kept going throughout my gaming days. It seems that there aren't as many weapon types as there was in FO2 though, but that's fine. I would be happy just shooting the heads off of things with my Sniper Rifle.

All in all I'm digging this game. I may run through the game again but doing it in an evil kind of way. That bomb in Megaton looks like it would make a big mushroom cloud.

Is anyone having issues with degrading performance?

I had to play this on low up until last night when I defraged my computer, and now today I can play it on ultra (minus AA @ 1680x1050). Only problem is now it runs slow even on low !?!?!?

I have a 5600+ cpu and 8800gts 640mb video card, the latest nvidia drivers and 4gigs of system ram (32bit windows says 3.5gigs so there ).

Maybe turn off Aero? I dunno, everything in your system looks fine, the only thing I can think of that could possibly affect your gameplay is Vista, since some people have trouble with it.
