What is safest way to ship a computer?

Thread Starter
I am shipping a computer to my friend. This is round 2 for me, the first computer I sent got damaged and FedEx had to refund me my money. I need this to get from Pennsylvania to California as safely as possible.

I'm considering air... I just want safest possible route.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for a case to use, please feel free to let me know. It must be sturdy, and small. I was thinking of the Antec 300.

I would not ship it all built, disassembling it is the safest way or at the very least take off the heatsink, and even being shipped by air it will still be in a truck at one point or another.

I'm planning on using stock heat sink... still think it would be a problem?

really, just pack it really well and send it ups with the right amount of insurance. don't use the post office, they suck at shipping big boxes. ups would be your best bet and if you want to pay the fee, you can go to a ups store and they will pack it real nice with bubble rap and stuff. the ups store near me (my dad has his company mail box their) do a great job and are really helpful!

EDIT: I like that antec 300! good choice!

buy a retail case, build the computer, and put it back in the box the case came in... companies like dell, hp, sony, gateway etc.. ship pcs and laptops all the time in boxes with no issues... I would think it would be ok, just get insurance on it to be safe.

the peanuts in the case are no necessary. also removing the gpu and the coolers shouldn't be required as well. just think, dell ships their computers with ups everyday and 99% of people get a good package. just good outer packaging!

FedEx failed miserably... I am willing to pay the extra $$ to get it done right. I am too annoyed with poor carriers not being able to do their job right (FEDEX).

Stock AMD cpu cooler is locked solid onto that mobo, plus I don't know if I should trust the person on the other end doing this lol.

But, I do agree with the peanuts inside the case. I initially thought about this, but figured the peanuts would conduct static. Didn't know there were anti-static ones!

I tried this... but then again, the foam that came with this was intended for a lighter load (empty case). I guess when I filled it, it became too much and the foam wasn't enough.

Any other suggestions for cases? I need something solid and compact. I was even considering a micro/mini atx

if your going to pay the premium, leave the compy in tact, take it to the ups store and pay to have them package it with a ton on bubble wrap, peanuts and a heavy duty box. then have them put a million fragile stickers on it and ship it priority air with $x insurance. it will cost you but it should arrive safely.
