Note on the i7:
I would need to change the mobo and ram along with the processor(obviously)
Between them there is 800 dollars. The cheapest i7 announced is upwards of 300 dollars,
I could start small on the requisite DDR3 standard (4gigs) and move up later. -(Approx 150).
leaving 650 dollars between a mobo and cpu

of course the mobo would need to support RAID, crossfire, and have either 6 SATA ports and hopefully one IDE connector.

So it is a toss-up

Either hold with Core and follow well traveled routes.
Or go with i7 and be future proof.

Or wait for a year and change out if the i7 becomes worth it.

If I we're in your position I would definitely go the Core i7 + X58 route; if you look at the most recent benchmarks the slowest i7 (Core i7 920) trumps the fastest Core 2 Quad. With that said if you continue on your current route in two-four months time your current rig will drop in price by atleast a grand and you would have 800-1000 to play around with.

That's awesome that your parents are willing to shell out so much for you for a birthday present. You said you'd be paying half, so that's great as well, but still 1500 for a birthday present is extremely spoiled but awesome. I am excited about your build. It seems pretty solid.

I took a little time to put together a $3k system. Granted, it's listed at $3155, I can guarantee you it'll be below $3k come January.

Here's the list.

Keep in mind, I'm partial to nVidia & that card will be 1/2 that in about 4-5 months and will make it easier to SLI in a shorter period of time than doing the x-fire with the ATI cards

I've got the two VelociRaptors in there purely for eliteness.. One 300GB would probably be enough to keep your OS & Games going quite well & you can mirror the VelociRaptor on the striped 1TB Barracudas as well as make a partition for storage.

I still don't understand your need for the RAID10 security unless your family is in the Witness Protection Program

Indignity, thank you for your time in the build. I however am partial to the Radeon 4870X2 for now, I will however take the ideas off your list into consideration.

Perhaps we should wait and see the mobo and cpu options for the i7 coming up.

Yeah yeah, ATI fanboy ... j/k!

Hopefully we'll see more 'real' benchmarks of i7 as the chips get leaked. There is a member here that has gotten his hands on one & is sharing his results. I think it's in the Intel section.

Whatever happens, enjoy your build!!!
