9800 GX2 for folding

Thread Starter
I've been told that a single 9800 GX2 gets around 10,000 ppd. Ofcourse before I go buying anything I want to check up on something things first.

I'm wondering does the GPU client recognize it as a single GPU and fold with both cores? Or do you have to run to GPU clients simultaneously? Are there any problems with using it in conjunction with win xp 64 bit? (not going to change my OS for it though)

Is 10,000 ppd a reasonable estimate? What are the top 3 nvidia cards for folding?

Thanks

you have to set it up for two clients.

and yea, its a reasonable estimate.

are you looking best bang for buck? or just which ones can produce the most ppd? are you only going to use one card or multiple cards?

well I am curious as to what nVidia card produces the most PPD. I've heard that the gtx 280 doesn't produce as much as the 9800 Gx2 because its not a dual gpu. I'll probably buy a recerted 9800 gx2 to save some money but if there is something out there that is way better I'll look into that too.

I'm thinking about getting the x38 DFI DK mobo for my computer to run the gpu on. Thoughts?

the 9800gx2 currently produces the most PPD out of any single card, because it is essentially 2 Nvidia GPUs in one (If ATI's were better folders the 4870x2 would be the top i am sure). For a single *GPU* the 280 produces the most, at 6-7kppd, while the 9800gx2 does 5-6k ppd per card (so 10-12 total).

That said, you can't use them in SLI while folding, they have to be unlinked, which may or may not be a concern for you. DFI DKs are great boards, i'd recommend them for sure. If there is a PLUS model of the board make sure to get that one though, they overclock better.

my next question comes to, are you going to fold with more than one card? if you are, get the LT version then you'd have 3 free pcie slots

Sadly, the GX2 will not put out close to 10k, somewhere around 9500k PPD is about right. The cards are only clocked in the 1600s 1500s for their shaders & they heat up a bunch when overclocked to make up any difference. I did run across a modification that somebody did that flipped the cards to allow each card a water-block and a big time overclock.

The "Big-point" card to have right now is the GTX280, but most of us cannot afford to put out $600 for one VGA .. Bottom line, if you are just planning on folding, it's worth it to get many cards rather than just one. Cheap cards like the 8800GS can be had for around $50 and a volt-mod to them can add a few hundred points per day

Indignity it seems that sublime dissagrees with you. Or was sublime referring to 10k to 12k ppd after doing the mod that indignity references.

yes, get that card, or you could go alittle cheaper and get the 8800gt, or the newer 9800gt, which is just the 8800gt with newer updates.

The info I got on the card was from the foldingforum.org site.... Now, that could pre-date the change to the core that happened a couple weeks ago that actually gave us a boost in GPU PPD. If that's the case, I apologize to Sub1!me for the misinformation! I would love to see a screenie of your output if you would Sub1!me? I'd take that info & shove it down that guy's all-knowing folding throat

This information would probably be indicative of a slight overclock of the shaders to achieve the points:

This attachment shows the values I was referring to:

I've got these 2 9800GTX+ cards rolling & they put out a decent amount of points as well. They also stay much cooler than the GX2 because of their die size. Their Shaders are both overclocked in the 2000 range.
